objectives:
• identify the role of greenhouse gases in
trapping heat from the sun and
maintaining the Earth’s temperature,
• relate the existence of greenhouse
gasses in our daily lives; and
• create a visual representation explaining
the greenhouse effect and its impact on
global warming.

The Greenhouse Effect
and Global Warming
CENTRAL MINDANAO COLLEGES
Prepared by Gian Kelly L. Sepulveda
Greenhouse effect -refers to the process
by which certain gases in the Earth's
atmosphere trap and hold heat from the sun,
leading to an increase in temperature.

Global warming –the increase of the

concentration of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere, leading to an enhanced
greenhouse effect and an alarming global
warming trend.
Greenhouse Effect: Several
greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere, including carbon
dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and
water vapor (H2O), trap part of the
outgoing IR radiation. This trapped
energy is then radiated back
towards the Earth's surface,
resulting in further warming of the

radiation in the form of
visible light, ultraviolet
(UV) radiation, and
infrared (IR) radiation

Surface Absorption:

Absorption: Some of absorbs the sunlight
the incoming sunlight and re-emits energy in

Earth's atmosphere. IR radiation.
Role of Greenhouse
Gases:
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
-is one of the primary greenhouse gases
contributing to the enhanced greenhouse effect. Its
sources include natural processes like volcanic
activity and decomposition, as well as human
activities such as burning fossil fuels and
deforestation.
Role of Greenhouse
Gases: Methane (CH ) 4
-is another important greenhouse gas that is even
more effective at trapping heat than carbon
dioxide, although it is present in lower
concentrations. It is mainly produced by natural
processes like wetland decomposition and the
digestive systems of ruminant animals. However,
human activities such as agriculture (rice
cultivation and livestock farming) and the
extraction and transport of fossil fuels also
Role of Greenhouse
Gases: Water Vapor (H O) 2
-is the most abundant greenhouse gas in the
Earth's atmosphere, but its concentration is
primarily controlled by temperature rather than
human activities. As temperatures rise due to
other greenhouse gas emissions, water vapor
concentrations also increase. It acts as a positive
feedback by amplifying the effect of other
greenhouse gases.
Global warming
-refers to the long-term increase in average global
temperatures. The increased concentration of greenhouse
gases in the atmosphere, primarily caused by human
activities, is a key driver of this phenomenon. As these
gases accumulate, they trap more heat, leading to a rise in
the Earth's temperature.

The consequences of global warming are far-reaching and

include rising sea levels, extreme weather events,
diminishing ice caps and glaciers, disrupted ecosystems,
and adverse effects on human health and economies.
Activity #4:

VISUALIZING GREENHOUSE
EFFECT

Direction: Create a visual

representation explaining the
greenhouse effect and its impact
on global temperature. Use
illustrations, labels, and select a
representative to provide a
REFLECTION

Directions: Relate the existence of greenhouse

gases in our daily lives by answering the
questions below.

1. What specific activity in your daily

routine that releases greenhouse gases?
2. As a youth how can you contribute in
reducing the production of greenhouse
gases?
FINISH THE SENTENCE
Direction: Write down in a 1 whole sheet
of paper what you have learned during the
lesson by completing the statement in 2-3
sentences.

Today, I learned that
