LEARNING OBJECTIVES
●The learner understands, describes
and interprets the graphs of
polynomial functions.
A linear function is a function that represents
a straight line on the coordinate plane. For
example, y = 3x +1 represents a straight line
on a coordinate plane and hence it represents a
linear function. Since y can be replaced with
f(x), this function can be written as f(x) = 3x +1
.
A quadratic function is one of the form f(x) =
a + bx + c, where a, b, and c are numbers with
a not equal to zero. The graph of a quadratic
function is a curve called a parabola. Parabolas
may open upward or downward and vary in
"width" or "steepness", but they all have the
same basic "U" shape.
A polynomial function is a function that
involves only non-negative integer powers or
only positive integer exponents of a variable in
an equation like the quadratic equation, cubic
equation, etc. For example, 2x+5 is a
polynomial that has exponent equal to 1.
