6500 T-Series Photonics
Key features

ROADM w/ Line Amp (RLA) circuit pack provides the following main functions and features:
Route and select wavelength switching through a twin 1X20 gridless WSS w/UPG
Optical amplification through a dual line EDFA consisting of a switchable gain pre-amp and a variable gain post-amp (w/ VOA)
Per channel optical monitoring through a gridless Optical Power Monitor (OPM) (OPM is in-skin and doesn't need to be externally
fibered)
Optical supervisory channel (OSC) support through a faceplate pluggable SFP and optical filtering of the OSC channel
External optical monitor ports and OTDR port; OTDR functionality will be available in a future 6500 release via an external circuit
pack, OTDR not integrated in RLA circuit pack.
CDC architecture provides the following main functions and features (refer to 6500 Rel. 10.1 CFN for details about the CDC architecture)
Colorless: any wavelength can be connected to any add/drop bank such as CCMD16x12 port
Directionless: any channel can be switched to any degree/direction
Contentionless: no wavelength blocking at nodal level in add/drop banks such as CCMD16x12
Flexible Grid Hardware (Flexible Grid software in a future 6500 software release)
The gridless channel plan is based on 6.25 GHz slices across the C-band (191.325 to 196.125 THz)
A channel is defined as a series of consecutive slices forming a passband. Channel spectral width can be as wide as the full range of
operating frequencies.

Key features, cont’d

96 channel support (6500 S-Series and D-Series supports 88 channels)

OTS provisioning done using Site Manager Configuration->Photonic Services->Photonic Configuration
Management application (aka Slot Sequencing)
Channel provisioning using L0 Control Plane model
OSRP provisioning is supported
L0 restoration to be supported in a future release
OTS CPS parameter is set to Enable and Autoroute parameter is set to Disable
Photonic domain segmentation must be used. That is, each ROADM to ROADM section must be have a
unique Optical System ID (OSID) and the DOC parameter must be set to true for all OTSs.
Only CDC architecture supported
FIM Type 3 supports up to 16 degrees per CDC node
FIM Type 3 offers flexibility in terms of degrees and add/drops where you can trade lower number of degrees
for more add/drop channels and vice versa
In Rel. 11.0, maximum number of degrees is 8, since MFC module (to be introduced in a future release)
is required for 16 degrees support
Reconfigurations that allow more channels per CDC node will be supported in a future release where
FIM Type 2 support will be introduced

By default, the VOA target loss is automatically calculated and set by DOC. However this Mon 2 (A) 10

functionality can be disabled and instead the VOA target loss can be manually user-provisioned.
The choice of automatic VOA target loss calculation/setting or manual VOA target loss setting
depends on the VOA facility “VOA Reset Required” parameter. When the parameter is set to
True, the VOA target loss calculation/setting is automatic.
The automatic VOA target loss calculation and setting is performed once based on the setting of
the VOA facility “VOA Reset Required” parameter
When the VOA facility is created, the VOA facility “VOA Reset Required” parameter inherits the
value from the “VOA Reset Required” parameter in the Node Information application (default
value is True). If it is set to True, this drives an automatic VOA target loss calculation/setting
after a DOC auto monitor cycle or after a dark channel add (i.e., first channel add in a photonic
domain).
Once the calculation/setting is complete and DOC has successfully set the VOA target loss,
DOC sets the VOA facility “VOA Reset Required” parameter to False

Degree and Add/Drop upgrades
Evolution Step 1

Start with FIM Type 3 as anchor FIM and connect degrees (RLA modules) to
FIM

• First RLA connects to Fiber Group 1

• Additional RLA’s connect to groups 2, 3, 4, …, up to 16 for 16 degrees. Adding
RLA modules to an existing traffic carrying node can be done in-service.
• For each RLA, simply connect A to A, B to B, C to C and D to D

Note: Any cabling mistakes will automatically be reported by the Cable Trace feature

Degree and Add/Drop upgrades
Evolution Step 2

Connect add/drop (CCMD modules) to FIM (8 degrees)

• This example shows a CCMD16x12 at an edge node with more than 4 degrees, which requires 2
AMP4 modules. If the node has 4 degrees or less, the 2 nd AMP4 module is not required.
• First CCMD16x12 connects to Fiber Group 20
• Additional CCMDs connect to Fiber Group 19, 18, 17, etc... Adding CCMD modules to an existing
traffic carrying node can be done in-service.
• For each CCMD:
1. Connect “Com A” port on CCMD to “CCMD” port on 1 st AMP4
2. Connect “Common” port on AMP4 to port A on FIM
3. Connect “Com B” port on CCMD to “CCMD” port on 2 nd AMP4
4. Connect “Common” port on AMP4 to port B on FIM

Evolution Step 3 (supported in a future release)

Connect add/drop (CCMD modules) to FIM (16 degrees)

• To support 16 degrees, 2 additional AMP4 modules are required for each
CCMD
• Additional MPO cabling is as follows:
5. Connect “Com C” port on CCMD to “CCMD” port on 3 rd AMP4
6. Connect “Common” port on AMP4 to port C on FIM
7. Connect “Com D” port on CCMD to “CCMD” port on 4 th AMP4

Packet: Logical Interfaces

Every Physical Port is an independent tag/label domain, enabling

customer and service scalability
Logical Ports may map 1:1 to physical ports or span multiple
PP PP PP PP physical ports for link aggregation groups. Logical ports may also
represent ODU interfaces
LP LP LP
Logical Interfaces are created by hierarchical ingress
LI LI LI LI LI classifications of a logical port (e.g., a set of VLANs, range of
priorities); may define transformations (e.g., Q-in-Q, dual-tag
Fl Fl Fl Fl push/pop/swap), and can be mapped to/from VIs of one or more

Make Before Break -Feature Summary

The Make Before Break (MBB) feature is the ability to setup a new SNC path prior to
tearing down the existing SNC path.
 Allows for maintenance actions associated with SNC Regroom, Reroute, and Reversion to be
performed in a Make Before Break (MBB) fashion
 Reduce traffic disruption for such actions to <10ms (tail-end switch)
 Allow for reuse of the existing connection’s own bandwidth on one or more segments of the new
path
 The new path may be regroomed with new constraints. A failure to complete the MBB action returns
the SNC to its original constraints.
 Not supported on MR-SNCP and S-SNCP (SNCP switch actions can be used to minimize traffic
impact).
 MBB capable links are identified through routing.
 If MBB is not supported on all links in path, behavior will fall back to existing release behavior.
Covers period of network upgrade.
 If bandwidth not available to setup the second circuit, the system will automatically fall-through to
standard operation (tear down of circuit and then bring-up on new path)

6500 T-Series OTN Control Plane:
Retain Home Path- Feature Summary

The Retain Home Path Feature reserves the resources of the Home Path while the SNC is
not on all or part of the Home Path.
 Maintain SNC Home Path Resources when the SNC is not present on the Home Path.
 Restrict other SNC’s from utilizing the Home Path Resources of another SNC.
 Allow SNC’s to Preempt Home Path Resources of another SNC during restoration if no other
path is available.
 Raise warning “Oversubscribe” alarm on any link on which preemption of
home path occurs
 Raise warning alarm on any SNC which performs home path preemption
