METAL IN MADICINE

CONTENTS
 INTRODUCTION
 METAL ION IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEM
 METAL DEFICIENCY AND DISEASE
INTRODUCTION
o Metal ions are required for many
critical function in human.
o Deficiency of some metal ion can lead
to disease ,for example anemia
resulting from iron deficiency , heart
disease in infants from copper
deficiency.
o Metal ions also induce toxicity in
human , classic examples being heavy
metals such as mercury and lead.
o Even essential metal ion can be toxic
METAL ION IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEM
 There are total twenty elements present in the
human body that are broadly classified into
two categories-
 ESSENTIAL ELEMENT
NON ESSENTIAL ELEMENT
Essential element
 The elements which are required for normal
functioning of body are called essential
elements.
for example- Fe , Zn ,Co ,Cu , Mg ,Ca etc.
Non essential element
 These include Br , B , Si , As ,Ti ,Ni , Al ,
These elements are not actually non essential
for body , but their functions are not known.
Metal deficiency and disease
Deficiency of bulk metal ion may give rise to
metabolic disorder , inhibited growth and
cause disease.
But some metal ion are necessary to our body
which called essential metals.
T he deficiency of these metals results death
or many type of disease.
DIFFERENT METAL ION AND THEIR
DEFICIENCY
Iron(Fe)
 Iron is present in all cells in
human body and has several
important function in our body.
 About 70% iron present in
hemoglobin and 30% present
in myoglobin.
 Most of the iron is stored as
ferritin.
 Total body iron average
approximately 3.8 gm in man
and 2.3 gm in woman.
Iron deficiency
 The deficiency of iron results
anemia.
 Most cases of iron deficiency
anemia are mild.
 But if not treated can cause
problem like fast of irregular
heartbeat , complication
during pregnancy, and
delayed growth in infants.
 Women and people with poor
diet are most susceptible to
the disease.
HOW TO PREVENT ANEMIA
Anemia can be
prevent by eating a
well balanced diet
containing good
source of iron ,
vitamin b12 and
FOLATE.
Zinc(Zn)
 Approximately 60% 0f the total
body zinc content is found in
skeletal muscle and 30% in bone
mass.
 It is needed for the bodies
immune system to properly work .
 It plays a role in cell division , cell
growth ,wound healing and
children growth.
 Zinc is also needed for the sense
of smell and taste.
Zinc deficiency
 A lake of zinc has numerous of
disorders , most common of
which are an increased rate of
diarrhea , pneumonia , and
malaria.
 Zinc deficiency affects about 2.2
billions people in the world.
 Zinc deficiency during pregnancy
can negatively affect both the
mother and fetus.
 Zinc deficiency in children can
caused delayed growth.
symptoms
 Acne.
 Dry skin.
 Hair fall.
 Impaired wound
healing.
 Mouth ulcer.
 Lake of energy.
 Getting tired easily.
How to cure zinc deficiency
 Zinc deficiency can be
cure by eating zinc rich
food like pulses , nuts ,
legumes , whole grains
cereals , fortified
breakfast cereals.
 Dairy product such as
cheese.
 Red meat and poultry.
Calcium(Ca)
 Calcium is very important mineral
that we need to stay strong and
healthy.
 Calcium is present as carbonate
and phosphates in the skeleton
structure of mammals.
 Calcium is essential for our body’s
overall nutrition and health.
 Calcium make up approximately
2% of our total body weight and
contribute to many body basic
function.
CALCIUM DEFICIENCY

 The deficiency of calcium

results disease like-
o OSTEOPENIA
o OSTEOPOROSIS
o HYPOCALCIMIA
CALCIUM
DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS
o Weak bones.
o Bone fractures.
o Weakness and fatigue.
o Delayed in child growth
and development.
o Heart problem.
o Problem with proper blood
clotting.
o Heart problem involving
How to prevent calcium deficiency
• We can easily correct a
calcium deficiency by
making certain change
in our diet and life style.
 Eat calcium rich food.
 Enjoy early morning
sunlight.
 Eat food rich in vitamin
D.
Magnesium
 Magnesium is needed for more
than 300 biochemical reaction
in the body.
 It help to maintain normal
nerve and muscle function.
 Support a health immune
system , keep the heartbeat
steady , and helps bones
remaining strong.
 Half of the magnesium in our
body is found in our bone while
the rest in our organ and cells
MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY

Magnesium deficiency caused-

 DIABETIC ACIDOSIS

 HYPOPARATHYROIDISM

 HYPERTHYROIDISM
SYMPTOMES
 Behavioral problem
 Muscles ache.
 Headache.
 Depression.
 Memory problem.
 Dry skin.
 Brittle nails.
 Rapid breathing.
 Vomiting.
 Dry mouth and fruity smelling
breath.
PRECAUTIONS
 This can be treated by
taking Magnesium rich
food like black beans ,
almonds , brown rice ,
sunflower seeds , dark
chocolate , Banana.
COPPER(CU)
 In human copper is essential to
proper functioning of organ and
metabolic process.
 Copper is involved in the formation
of red blood cells.
 Copper needed for health skin and
eyes.
 Copper is important for the
production of hemoglobin and red
blood cells.
 Copper plays an important role in
maintaining a healthy metabolism.
Deficiency and disease

Copper deficiency is un
common but
sometimes found in
combination with iron
deficiency especially
with iron deficiency
anemia
Symptoms
 Anemia
 Low body temperature
or always feeling cold
 Paleness
 Fatigue
 Getting sick
 Hair thinning
 Weight lose
 Joint pain
HOW TO CURE COPPER DEFICIENCY

 Many of the excellent

food source of copper
are leafy greens ,
spinach , mustard
greens , kale.
 The good and very good
source of copper
include many legumes ,
whole grains , nuts , and
seeds.
