Introduction
• General occurrence reports consist of:

• Cover page: details surrounding the incident or


offence (dates, times, names, descriptions of
suspects, descriptions of property)
• Narrative page(s): where the story of the
incident is recorded
• Necessities: things that are needed to maintain
life (food, water, safety)

When is a General Occurrence


Report Required?
• Any time an officer responds to a call where an
offence has been committed or is believed to
have been committed, they must write a general
occurrence report
• Examples: traffic accident, theft, assault, public
intoxication

• All relevant information from the notebook must
appear in the report
• Information doesn’t have to be repeated in the
narrative if already on the cover page
• Each section of the narrative will be a different length,
depending on information provided
• The narrative usually contains summary, background,
facts, and outcomes

Reporting Information—Reviewing
Key Concepts
• Review your work to ensure that you:
• Have not used slang, cliché, or jargon

• Are writing objectively and leaving out your bias or


opinions
• Are spelling workplace words correctly

• Are writing in the active voice

• Know the difference between the first-person point of


view and the third-person point of view

Changing Direct Speech to


Indirect Speech
1. Direct words become an indirect statement,
question, or command. Quotation marks are
eliminated
2. Pronouns usually change from first to third
person
3. Verbs in the present tense usually change to
some form of the past tense
