Question 9

Solution (i)
Assumptions:
• The material of the shaft is homogeneous and
isotropic.
• The shaft is loaded within its elastic limit.
• The twist is uniform along the length of the shaft.
• The cross-sections of the shaft remain plane during
twisting.
Cont....
• Consider a circular shaft of radius R subjected to a
torque T. Let's analyze a cross-section of the shaft.
Cont...
• Due to the torque, the shaft twists, and a radial line
on the cross-section rotates through an angle θ.
• The deformation of a small element at a distance r
from the center is proportional to r and θ
• γ = rθ/L
• where L is the length of the shaft.
Cont....

• Within the elastic limit, shear stress (τ) is

proportional to shear strain (γ) (Hooke's law)
• τ = Gγ
• where G is the shear modulus of the material.
• Substituting the expression for shear strain:
• τ = G(rθ/L)
• From the above equation, it is clear that the shear
stress (τ) is directly proportional to the radial
distance (r) from the center of the shaft.
Cont....
• At the center (r = 0), the shear stress is zero.
• At the surface (r = R), the shear stress is maximum.
Solution(ii)
• The material is homogeneous (elastic property
throughout)
• The material should follow Hooke’s law
• The material should have shear stress proportional to
shear strain
• The cross-sectional area should be plane
• The circular section should be circular
• Every diameter of the material should rotate through
the same angle
• The stress of the material should not exceed the elastic
limit
Cont...

• Consider a solid circular shaft with radius R that is

subjected to a torque T at one end and the other end
under the same torque.
Cont....
Angle in radius =arc/radius
Arc AB = RӨ = Lγ
Where, A and B: two fixed points on the circular shaft
y=RӨ/L............(i)
Where y is the shear strain or angle subtended by AB
From, C=τ/y
y=τ/C
From (i) above
Therefore, τ/C=RӨ/L
Cont....
Consider a small strip of radius with thickness dr that is
subjected to shear stress.

Where,
r: radius of small strip
dr: thickness of the strip
γ: shear stress
