hazards
Introduction
Climate change exacerbates water scarcity and
deteriorates water quality due to extreme weather
events, including intense rainfall and flooding, which can
introduce pathogens and toxins into water sources. This
contamination presents substantial health hazards,
resulting in illnesses such as diarrhea, which impacts
almost 900 million individuals worldwide annually owing
to unclean water (DeNicola, Subramaniam, & Carpenter,
2015).

DeNicola et al., also emphasizes that access to potable

water and sufficient sanitation is essential for public
health. Access is almost universal in high-income
nations, whereas low- and middle-income countries
have considerable obstacles, with just 79% achieving
improved water access and 49% obtaining acceptable Source: Black Star Images/Spotlight (https://www.spotlightnsp.co.za/2021/09/23/in-focus-water-shortages-in-

sanitation. This discrepancy results in an increased
disease burden in impoverished nations
Objectives
The main objective of this research is to develop a Hybrid two-way powered water treatment device as a sustainable solution
for providing safe drinking water to remote areas. To support the main objective of the study, the following specific objectives
are needed:
• To develop a functional prototype of the hybrid two-way powered water treatment
device that achieves a minimum water purification rate of [5 liters/hour] and meets
1 the water quality standards for drinking water (PNSDW)

• To integrate solar and battery components, and fuel based power generation to
ensure the device can operate autonomously for at least (12 hours) under
2 average sunlight conditions and minimal fuel consumption

• To select a combination of filtration and disinfection (water treatment)

technologies that will eliminate contaminants as identified in PNSDW from a
3 range of water (freshwater and seawater) sources

• To calculate the energy efficiency and specific energy consumption of the

system for both power sources.

Significance of the Proposal
The importance of this study rests in its ability to solve the pressing problems of water contamination and scarcity in isolated
areas, where access to potable water is frequently scarce or nonexistent. By creating an effective and sustainable water
treatment system, this study can help:
Enhanced Public Health
 Decrease in waterborne illnesses: Having access to safe drinking water can help drastically lower the incidence of illnesses like
cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea, which disproportionately affect vulnerable groups in isolated places.
 Better general health: People and communities benefit from having access to clean water since it is necessary to maintain proper
cleanliness and health.

Economic Growth
 Increased productivity in agriculture: Farmers can produce crops and cattle more effectively when they have access to clean water,
which benefits local economies.
 More job opportunities and better economic prospects can result from companies and industries moving to remote places when they
have access to clean water.

Environmental and Social Advantages

 Communities can become more resilient to climate change and natural catastrophes, which can worsen water scarcity, by having
access to clean water.
 Sustainability of the environment: By preserving and protecting regional water supplies, sustainable water treatment technologies
can support environmental sustainability.

Technological Progress
 Innovation in water treatment: The creation of a hybrid two-way powered water treatment system is a technological breakthrough in
the purification of water that could result in additional advancements and enhancements.
