Definition
Muscle Injuries -referring to injuries sustained by the striated muscles; physical damage that causes harm to the muscles. *striated contraction of this muscles brings up physical movements.

Classification
I. Indirect trauma injuries include delayed onset muscle soreness and muscle strain. II. Direct trauma injuries are subdivided into muscle contusion and muscle laceration.

TYPES of Muscle Injuries

Contusions - also called muscle bruises. Symptoms; pain at the site of injury. Hematomas -mass of blood in tissues -occurs when direct force causes a muscle to bleed.

Hematoma

Strain / Tendonitits - a pulled muscle, - the connective tissue/ muscles that attaches it to a bone called a tendon is overly stretched or torn. Sprain - involves ligaments rather than full muscles or tendons. *ligaments are muscular bands that hold two bones together

CRAMP -the muscle forcibly contracts and will not relax; can be very painful and last from about 15 seconds to several minutes. RUPTURE - a separation of muscle tissue. - a rare injury that usually occurs with weight lifting.

Causes
Overstretched a sudden movement reaching too far lifting something that is so heavy even through laughing or sneezing violently-particularly when someone is either unfit, tense or cold. People who perform intense exercise

People who get infected with certain types of bacteria, viruses or parasites certain types of muscle disorders e.g. lupus, polymyositis People who experience physical trauma may injure their muscles People who use poor or improper technique during physical activity overused muscle

Signs and Symptoms

Pain - pain is the most common. Depending on the severity and location of the strain, this pain will range from dull to sharp. Swelling - Swelling is usually isolated to the area of the strain, due to a sudden influx of fluid; causes the muscle to inflame and the area to swell. Bruising - blood leaks out of these damaged capillaries and collects just under the skin

Weakness & Stiffness - limits their ability to expand and contract, producing a loss in flexibility and strength. Popping - hear a popping or snapping sound at the time of the strain. ; a severe strain ; actual separation. Immobility - muscle failure; ability to expand and contract can end; both the expansion and contraction are responsible for movement, the area of the injury encounters a limited or total loss of mobility.

Treatment

In many cases the muscle will heal without medical attention Minor muscle injuries may be treated with simple home remedies, such as: rest, applying ice using compression bandage and elevating your injured limb anti-inflammatory medication may also help.

*Physiotherapy may also be able to help you manage your symptoms. *treatment of injuries Severe muscle injuries need to be checked by a qualified health care provider. e.g. A torn muscle or tendon may need to be surgically repaired.
