Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: The Hate U Give

January 22nd, 2019

The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give opened in limited release in October and while it never reached the top five, it did very well at the box office. Its reviews are 97% positive, but it hasn’t gone anywhere during Awards Season. Does it deserve more? Or is it busted Oscar-bait? More...

Home Market Releases for November 20th, 2018

November 20th, 2018

Crazy Rich Asians

This Friday is Black Friday, one of the biggest shopping days of the year. However, while there will be tons of sales, DVDs and Blu-rays that come out on Tuesday tend not to be part of the sales, because they have only been out for a few days. Because of this, it is usually a slow week on the home market. This is certainly true this year, as there’s only one significant first-run release, Crazy Rich Asians (Buy from Amazon). On the positive side, it is a pick of the week contender. Its only competition for that title is the Criterion Collection release for Some Like it Hot (Buy from Amazon). It was close, but in the end I went with Crazy Rich Asians. On a side note, both are lucky they are in competition for Pick of the Week, as it was going to be K-ON Complete Collection Premium Box Set, but it got pushed back from this week till February. I pre-ordered it in July and I’ve been waiting a long, long time for this box set. More...

August 22nd, 2018

The Wife

The Wife topped the theater average chart over the weekend with an average of $27,071 in four theaters. The film’s reviews are amazing and Glenn Close is earning some Oscar buzz, so perhaps it will stick around for a while. We the Animals was next with an average of $21,119 in three theaters. Blaze was also playing in three theaters earning an average of $14,750. More...

2018 Preview: August

August 1st, 2018

Christopher Robin

Overall, July was a a little weaker than expected. Ant-Man and the Wasp appears to be on pace for $200 million, while it is too soon to tell if Mission: Impossible—Fallout will also get there. That said, 2018 is still ahead of 2017 by $550 million, so the month of July was a success in that regard. As for August, there’s only one movie that is expected to earn $100 million, Christopher Robin, and maybe a few others that could hit $50 million. It’s a rather sad slate of movies. Fortunately, last August was even worse, so 2018 should at least maintain its lead. Maybe we can get lucky and come away with a $600 million lead by the end of the month. More...

Theater Averages: Eighth Grade Repeats a Grade

July 25th, 2018

Eighth Grade

Eighth Grade remained on top of the theater average chart with an average of $24,975 in 33 theaters over the weekend. McQueen and Blindspotting were right behind with averages of $24,718 and $24,024 in 4 and 14 theaters respectively. The re-release of Wanda opened with $10,679 in one theater. The two wide releases of the week were next with The Equalizer 2 and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! in a virtual tie at $10,629 and $10,537 respectively. More...

Weekend Estimates: Equalizer more than Equals Mamma Mia

July 22nd, 2018

The Equalizer 2

In a shocking turn of events, The Equalizer 2 overtook Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! over the weekend with $35.83 million. This is better than predicted and is better than the original managed. Its reviews are not great, but it earned an A from CinemaScore and it is aimed at a more mature target audience, so it should have better than average legs. We will have a better picture this time next week. Internationally, the film managed $3.3 million on 704 screens in 11 markets, including $2.2 million in Australia. The film first didn’t do great internationally, so while this is a 30% improvement, it is still nothing special. More...

More...

Theater Averages: Wife has a Blazing Hot Start

August 22nd, 2018

The Wife

The Wife topped the theater average chart over the weekend with an average of $27,071 in four theaters. The film’s reviews are amazing and Glenn Close is earning some Oscar buzz, so perhaps it will stick around for a while. We the Animals was next with an average of $21,119 in three theaters. Blaze was also playing in three theaters earning an average of $14,750. More...

Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood

More...

Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms

It is not a busy week for limited releases, but the majority of the ones on the main list are worth checking out. I think Blindspotting has the best shot at box office success, but personally I’m most interested in seeing Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms. More...
