Ang Lee won Best Director at the
Directors Guild of America Awards for his work on
Brokeback Mountain, while
Grizzly Man won for Best
Documentary. Neither award is considered a surprise, which itself is becoming almost a cliche, as there have been almost no surprises this award season so far.

It's a relatively strong week for DVD releases with several contenders for DVD Pick of the Week.
This shouldn't be too surprising since Boxing Week sales have become much more important in recent years.
However, it is still not as strong as it has been in the past several weeks and there are also a lot of releases that look like they are simply being dumped on the market.
In the end, Toy Story 2 - 2-Disc Special Edition was the clear choice for DVD Pick of the Week, but there are some others worth picking up.
One last note, some DVDs were released yesterday to take full advantage of the Boxing Week sales and this list includes them as well.

The Independent Spirit Awards announced the nominations today and
The Squid and the Whale led the way with six nominations, including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and nods in three of the four acting categories.

Note: Since this article was written, we have received opening weekend numbers for Ballet Russes, which earned $12,230 in a single theater, and tops the final chart
The re-release of The Passenger led the way on the per theatre charts, with an average of $12,079 in two theatres.
Just behind was Paradise Now with a nearly identical average of $12,006, but the latter film did it in twice as many theatres.
The only holdover to top $10,000 was Shopgirl, with 460,000 in 42 theatres for an average of $11,037. Lastly, the overall box office champ, Saw II , just managed to reach the that milestone with $31.7 million in 2,949 theatres for an average of $10,758.

There was just the single film in the $10,000 club this weekend and it was the overall box office leader, The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
The film, which was a surprise hit over the weekend, earned just over $30 million in 2,981 theaters for a $10,082 per theatre average.

Word of mouth is obviously helped The Untold Story of Emmett Till since it saw its weekend Per Theatre average climb to $12,290, up from $8,695 last weekend. It was also the only film to reach the $10,000 mark during a weekend that saw three films open with per theatre averages below $1,000.
