International Box Office: Zootopia Remains Tops with International Haul of $64.8 million
March 23, 2016
Zootopia remained in first place with $64.8 million in 49 markets for totals of $389.9 million internationally and $590.8 million worldwide. The film's biggest opening was in Australia, where it earned first place with $3.08 million on 479 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.48 million including previews. It also topped the charts during its opening weekend in Brazil with $2.57 million on 774 screens. The film's biggest market overall was China, where it remained in first place with $37.24 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $172.79 million. This blows past Kung Fu Panda 3's record for an animated film and it will soon become the first such film to reach the $200 million mark in that market.
The Revenant returned to the international chart earning second place with $36.4 million in 24 markets over the weekend for totals of $302.0 million internationally and $483.1 million worldwide. The film opened in second place in China with $31.88 million over the weekend for a four-day opening of $32.16 million.
Kung Fu Panda 3 slipped to third place with $31.8 million in 51 markets over the weekend for totals of $257.0 million internationally and $395.4 million worldwide. Its biggest market this weekend was in Italy where it earned first place with $2.58 million on 640 screens for a total opening of $3.57 million, including previews. The film had to settle for second place in Germany with $1.60 million on 1,073 screens.
The Divergent Series: Allegiant was pushed into fourth place with $22.0 million in 77 markets over the weekend for a two-week total of $53.4 million. This is a terrible figure for a film that cost $110 million to make. The film opened in second place in Mexico with $2.52 million on 2,221 screens. The film fell 55% in Russia to just $1.30 million on 1,642 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of just $5.00 million. It was even worse in the U.K., where it fell 58% to $1.15 million on 532 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.77 million after ten days of release. At this pace, $200 million worldwide is going to be tough to reach. That's not enough to break even any time soon.
London Has Fallen earned fifth place with $10 million in 43 markets over the weekend for a total of $45 million so far. This film was given the greenlight under the assumption that its international setting would boost its international box office numbers when compared to its predecessor. The first film only made $51.6 million internationally, so it will top that figure, but not by enough to matter.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on Friday, so it is important to keep track of its main competition: Deadpool. This week, the film earned seventh place internationally with $6.1 million in 33 markets for totals of $389.7 million internationally and $730.7 million worldwide. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice needs to top Deadpool worldwide, or there will be trouble for their upcoming slate.
