International Box Office: Jungle Book Mauls the Competition with $136.1 million
April 21, 2016
The Jungle Book roared to first place with $136.1 million in 49 markets for very early totals of $187.4 million internationally and $290.7 million worldwide. This includes a first-place, $49.26 million opening in China. It also dominated the chart in the U.K. with $14.80 million in 594 theaters. It also opened in first place in France ($7,99 million on 653 screens) and Germany ($5.13 million on 934). These openings are great, but not as great as its domestic debut. Then again, its domestic debut was stunning.
The Huntsman: Winter's War rose from fifth to second place; however, this was due to the competition collapsing and not its box office soaring. In fact, it fell to $17.6 million in 25 markets over the weekend for a two-week total of $43.0 million. The film opened in second place in Russia with $1.99 million on 1,206 screens. It managed third place in South Korea with $1.23 million on 557 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.16 million. On the other hand, the film opened in first place in both the Philippines ($1.63 million on 162 screens) and Malaysia ($1.59 million on 126).
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice fell to third place with $15.1 million in 67 markets for totals of $516.0 million internationally and $827.3 million worldwide. Getting to $900 million is going to be very difficult.
Zootopia remained in fourth place with $10.8 million in 53 markets for totals of $574.8 million internationally and $882.2 million worldwide. The film opens in Japan on Saturday and that should keep in it the top five.
London Has Fallen fell to fifth place with $9.0 million in 37 markets for totals of $120.0 million internationally and $181.4 million worldwide. It fell 68% in China down to $7.87 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $45.75 million. That's a big drop, but its running tally is nearly three times more its nearest international market.
