Brad Pitt: producer; political and environmental activist; officially the sexiest man alive in 1995, and then again in 2000, according to sexiness experts at People magazine.
On top of all that, he's also managed to appear in a number films over the years, most recently in the critically acclaimed 12 Years a Slave, in cinemas today.
Here's our selection of the actor's most memorable performances to date – but what else deserves to be on our list? Let us know in the thread below.
1. Inglorious Basterds
Pitt bought the perfect level of Southern swagger to his portrayal of Lieutenant Aldo Raine, leader of the titular Basterds, a guerilla army of American Jews charged with cutting a brutal swath through Nazi Germany.
2. Fight Club
What other actor could have so convincingly played Tyler Durden, the Dionysian alpha male whose club we're not supposed to talk about?
3. Twelve Monkeys
Pitt reportedly spent weeks visiting a psychiatric ward as preparation for his role as Jeffrey Goines – director Terry Gilliam had originally wanted to go with Jeff Bridges.
4. Se7en
SPOILER WARNING: If you've not seen Se7en before DO NOT watch the clip below, in which Pitt's Detective Mills is horrifyingly bested by serial killer John Doe (Kevin Spacey).
5. True Romance
Pitt isn't on screen for long in Tony Scott's comic thriller – but his performance has got to rank among the best ever cinema portrayals of someone being really, really stoned – and thus easily earns its place in this list.
