I don’t even know how to compost or what composting is.

At present, the authorities in the Ugandan capital are drafting plans to turn organic waste into compost and reduce "unnecessary waste" coming into the city.

Heat that biomass up without fully consuming it and it turns to nearly pure carbon known as biochar, which farmers soak in compost or fertilizer to “charge” it with nutrients, then add to their soils.

That can be done either by reducing the amount of single-use plastics these companies create and sell, or by manufacturing products that can be recycled or composted.

The law was designed to trigger a series of escalating composting and recycling requirements on consumer product packaging — with the polystyrene target pegged first.
