In a rug pull, insiders buy up a large share of meme coin tokens in advance and then dump them after the price soars, leaving regular investors with tokens that are essentially worthless.

The criminals, known as Lazarus Group, swiped the huge haul of digital tokens in a hack on crypto exchange ByBit two weeks ago.

Earlier this week, tech leaders and even cryptocurrency executives who backed Trump expressed skepticism about the creation of a reserve that includes tokens other than bitcoin.

So when he made his latest pro-crypto announcement, posting on Sunday that the U.S. government would purchase and hold digital tokens in a "Crypto Strategic Reserve," prices briefly surged.

"Trading revenue" will be paid as the tokens are sold, the website says.
