Apple to update AI feature after inaccurate news alerts

Apple plans to update an AI feature responsible for summarising news stories, following a series of inaccurate notifications sent to iPhone users.

These include notifications that Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering a US healthcare executive, had shot himself; that the retired tennis player Rafael Nadal had come out as gay; and that 17-year-old Luke Littler had been crowned PDC World Darts Champion (before the competition had started).

Responding to criticism from the BBC and other news outlets, Apple confirmed that a software update would be rolled out in the coming weeks to “further clarify” when Apple Intelligence – powered by OpenAI – is summarising notifications.

Last May, Tim Cook highlighted his company’s $100 billion investment in generative AI over the past five years. Apple still trails its competitors.
