Translation for the Judd and Li'l Judd page of Splatoon 3 Ikasu Art Book

Judd

[Impartially judging countless battles]

A cat who was granted eternal life by his adoptive father, a certain professor, shortly before the downfall of humanity. He has witnessed the march of time over the past 12,000 years as an observer of history. His keen eye for judging Inklings’ battles is as sharp as ever, even in the Splatlands. Recently, his favorite spot seems to be the sofa in the corner of the lobby.

Li'l Judd

[Scratchy fur and a sulky attitude]

A lifeform that was created as a clone of Judd. He's been troubled by his origins ever since the time he was born, and has ultimately fallen into a slump. Recently, even grooming himself has become too much of a pain, and his once-fluffy fur has now become scratchy. He plots to stab Judd in the back, but he's currently troubled by the fact that he's still too short to put his plans into action.

Was it confirmed that Acht speaks inklish in bancala or anywhere else? In a post, you also mentioned the accent being an intentional tone. Is it a mix of both tone and octarian accent or explicitly just the tone?

I hope this ask doesn't sound too confusing. I wanted to make a note of how Acht comes off in speech. Thank you.

short answer: there’s no canon info specifying whether Acht speaks the inkling language. however, in the JP version, Acht speaks in a similar way to other Octarian characters, with said specific way of speaking for these other characters very likely denoting accented speech. but...

hi, is #3-etude from bancala walker? had no luck tracking it down. and thank you for your translations!

yep, it's a novella at the very end of bancala walker that spans large 6 pages of pure text (saying this to get across that it might take a while to translate). many english fans understandably weren't even aware of its existence before the book's release, since it was only mentioned in the blurb on store websites and not the tweet announcing it.

when you ever consider looking back at the October 2018 Nintendo Dream interview, it has some of our greatest understanding of sanitization and yet the current translation still feels a bit wonky in terms of wording https://docs.google.com/document/d/1k52uO84GPBfJgZfcsBX_5qMZ-De2L86uY7kP_amoSEA/edit

アレを4つ集めた後にはその実験体がこの世界に存在した証として、大切に保管されます。実験体は最終的に練り上げられてしまい、元の姿や意識を失った存在になってしまいます。
After collecting the four thangs, the test subjects get carefully preserved, as they have proven their existence to the world. They are ultimately kneaded into a paste, losing their original form and consciousness, and thus becoming one with existence.
→ After collecting the four thangs, the test subject is carefully preserved, as proof that they existed in this world. Ultimately, the test subject is refined into a being that has lost their original form and consciousness.

練り上げる can mean to knead (練る/neru) well (in line with the JP name for Kamabo Co. and Mem Cakes), and (possibly leading off from the other meaning) to refine. I feel that the original is leaning into that dual meaning.

this next part WAS corrected, but I suppose here it is a full sentence. (obligatory "this was written long before acht was referred to with gender-neutral pronouns in the english version and i wouldn't bring this up for that reason")

Dedf1shは制作に対する迷いや葛藤を捨て、音楽に全てを捧げるため、半ば自分から消毒を望んだらしいです
It is said that Dedf1sh wasn’t against the idea of being sanitized, and did it so that she could give up her doubts and conflicts about production and devote herself entirely to music.
It seems that Dedf1sh wished to be sanitized partially of their own accord, in order to throw away any doubts or conflicts about creation and completely devote themself to music.

that 半ば is well and truly doing a lot.

missed this on a first pass, but there's a sentence missing in the translation just before the line about dedf1sh.

消毒とは生命のエネルギーを浄化することで、余計な迷いや心の不安定が無くなり、忠実なネル社の一部として活動するようになります。善や悪などの概念を失い、より効率的なに職務を実行するようになります。Dedf1shは制作に対する迷いや葛藤を捨て、音楽に全てを捧げるため、半ば自分から消毒を望んだらしいです。
Sanitization is to purge life's energies so that they no longer cause unnecessary hesitation and instability in the mind, and to become a part of the loyal Kamabo Corporation. They lose any notion of good or evil, and become more efficient at carrying out their duties. It seems that Dedf1sh wished to be sanitized partially of their own accord, in order to throw away any doubts or conflicts about creation and completely devote themself to music.

hey so, out of all the possible Mizuta and Marina ship names, what speaks to you?

  • DedFresh (from DJHyperfresh)
  • Mizuna
  • Maruta
  • Achtina (not serious about this)
  • iidacht/iidahato (kinda cute?)
  • Marinacht (most popular I think)

i guess if you're earnestly pursuing my opinion for some reason... the last one, since i like it when part of one name connects by letter to the other :P in the JP fandom it's ミズイイ/mizuii (they follow the pattern of the first one or two syllables of both characters' names. just ignore the bloody wars in broader fandoms fought over what order these sets of syllables should go in.)

Anonymous asked:

Do you think Acht likes Nasty Majesty because they're Marina's ex and they have experienced her "Nasty Majesty" firsthand?

oh right i remember seeing "marina and acht were dating" being canon from from a machine translation of #3-etude (likely due to the word 付き合い) (or maybe 関係). i can assure you that what transpires is even sadder than that. anyway i personally think they chose it because they like it as a song

most blatant example of my tunnel-visioning: my brain not processing that acht was also called by mizuta=ahato in the ordertune booklet while reading it earlier due to fixating on something else entirely
