Danganronpa Despair Time - Major Arcana Motif Theory
CW: Discussion of hanging & Spoilers
The AltDRDT cast is designed around the chinese zodiac but I've been wondering recently whether or not there could be some motif basis for the despair time cast.
I tried applying astrology to them but it really didn't fit & I couldn't figure out how to stretch that cast into 17+ characters.
Then I started assigning major tarot arcana to them & I'm now actually quite sure there's some thread here. I have comprehensive thoughts on all of these however in brief the explanations for each of these placements are as follows:
- Fool - Teruko: Fool's Table, 'Fool for trusting anyone at all' - Teruko's luck is a self fulfilling prophecy which she foolishly continues to perpetuate.
- Magician - XF-Ture Tech: Creates 'magic', created MonoTV - potentially responsible for the killing game and was responsible for Min's talent. Appeared and disappeared from Min's life.
- High Priestess - Hu: Elegant, graceful, beautiful, soothing, harmonious. A 'servant of the people.'
- Empress - Mai: Nameless 'ghost' haunting or ruling Teruko's life & story. 'God.' ['worshipped' by the class.]
- Emperor - Kyo: Faceless 'ghost' haunting or ruling Teruko's life & story.
- Hierophant - Rose: Lacroix = The Cross & Rose made a 'deal with the devil (Duke). Notably, her memory could also be considered 'psychic.'
- Lovers - Whit: He's a matchmaker who is 'fated' to never find a lover who's current closest friend is a (also lonely & socially awkward) man he met in a killing game.
- Chariot - Ace: Horses. He is the vessel through which his family thrives. Horses are also often associated with death as a result of the four horseman & Ace's fear of death is what prompted him to kill.
- Strength - Levi: He is fixated on protecting his classmates with his 'strength.' Has also used his 'strength' to perform multiple murders.
- Hermit - Nico: Nico consistently isolated from others and doesn't understand social conventions. They spent most of chapter 1 not speaking to anyone.
- Wheel of Fortune - Eden: Eden was born on new year's & is a clockmaker. Circles & cycles are significant motifs to her character. She is also the most 'fortunate' of the cast, so much so that both Levi & Arei have envied her ability to be kind, and in Arei's case explicitly her good fortune.
- Justice - J: J spent most of trial 2 being presented as a moral center for the group who holds people accountable for their actions & calls them on their hypocrisy. J has very strong moral principles, especially and particularly around murder & notably she sought out 'justice' or vengeance on Arturo by revealing his secret.
- Hanged Man - Arei: Her life was broadly misfortunate prior to this & she has previously received death threats which encouraged her to hang herself. She was of course also hung with the same rope used to mock her misfortune.
- Death - Veronika: Fear of death isn't something Veronika has - instead, she fears boredom. She instills the fear of death into Ace & savors the 'interesting' deaths of her classmates.
- Temperance - Charles: Charles was potentially born as a replacement to Ellie. Ellie was (probably) a drunk & an addict who brought shame onto his family name. Charles' very existence is the 'temperance' of the family - he is the 'solution' to his brother's 'impurity.'
- Devil - Duke: The Spurlings (probably) both bring misfortune and death onto others however Duke specifically made a deal with Rose at her time of misfortune.
- Tower - Arturo: Arturo's old broken household was the 'tower' which he escaped from. Felicity was the princess who he failed to save.
- Star - David: Self explanatory
- Moon - Min: Sleepy MV, staying up late to study, being the first 'blackened' [night] which eclipses the 'sun' [Xander] & makes the 'stars come out' [David], the MV backdrop being a moon, the sunset during her bonus video. Also, wolves howl at the moon. Also, Teruko's surname name means 'dawn child' - if Min is the sun setting and the night [killing game] starting, Teruko is the sun rising again - she is dawn.
- Sun - Xander: The death which began the killing game & brought everyone else into 'the night', David's 'hope' & 'ideal' which he 'revolves around', the reason the killing game began to start with
- Judgement - MonoTV: Host or judge of the killing game.
- World - Audience: Self explanatory. We are the outside world.
I hope this was insightful, engaging or helpful ! Please be well and take care. : )
