There's good fanfictions and then there's those fanfictions that take you by the hand and whisper words of gold in your ears and gently guide you through unexplored lands and they could say the wildest thing about your favorite character and you'd instantly trust them
You know what I think its grossly under-rated in fandom? Second loves.
What it's like to love and lose and then love again. To suffer through either the death of a loved one or the death of a love you used to share. To know that loss, to know that hurt, and to still make yourself vulnerable to someone again. To love scared, to love wounded, to love anyway.
By under rated in fandom I mean so often past loves are either erased completely or downplayed like "oh yeah they weren't really in love.". I think it flattens the character. Humans are capable of so much love. Each relationship is different and you can learn from each one! And yes, there's something brave in learning to love again, something incredible romantic, why pass it by?
โAnd Iโve got to tell you, thereโs one funny scene, and I always pick on him about it, because he always liked to pick on me on things, too. But in the steam shower scene, okay? Check that scene out. With Val kind of with his back up against the steam room wall and like a cat scratching his back on a post or something. Itโs so endearing in a way, but itโs so Val.โ

ugh why must I be always so repulsed by my own vulnerability but I find it very moving and impressive if other people are vulnerable with me????

#lotr#sometimes I think about how real authority - real kingship especially - is at heart service and submission#and how Aragon spends his life (ranger or king or friend) serving others#kneeling before them#affirming the kingship of other kings EVEN THOUGH he sometimes outkings them!!#and the moment of his greatest authority is really a submission of his will to his vocation#when I say I sometimes think about this#I mean easily 2-3 times a weekย (via byjovimbeinghumble)
imma say it.ย โkung fu pandaโ did more for body positivity and saying that ย you can be fat and still be healthy and liked than ANYTHING any beauty companies trying to get your money.

Hey yknow how Viper was born without fangs, but instead of being rendered helpless as her family thought sheโd be, she instead used her other skills to become the best warrior in her clan?
And how Tigress had severe, destructive anger issues when she was younger, but instead of being painted as a โproblem childโ she was instead taught her how to channel her emotions into something constructive?
And how Crane trained extra hard to impress a girl, and was by all rights the hero of his own story, but he still didnโt get her in the end? And how the girl isnโt shamed for it?
Itโs almost as if you get more mileage out of treating your characters (and the people they resemble) with compassion than you do just shamelessly stamping them with your own misconceptions and hang ups.

The whole central ethos of the franchise is that thereโs no such thing as being The Bestโข - thereโs just being the best version of yourself you can be, and honoring/channeling your own strengths is the wise and badass thing to do.
It's so, SO important to share success stories like this. I know an actual JPL engineer who doesn't believe in climate change because, "you never hear about acid rain anymore."
He thinks climate change can be lumped in with acid rain and the ozone layer of "things that were overblown and not really important because no one talks about it anymore."
It didn't even occur to him that we actively fixed the problem. Here's the EPA page on acid rainfall.
From the page:
It's also important to talk about success stories tonfuel hope that we can overcome current and future conservation and environmental issues.

Anonymous Asked: So what would the story be forย your modern Les Miserables AU?
It would literally beย the same exact story. Valjean commits a minor crime. He ends up spending 19 years in prison for said minor crime. He ultimately turns his life around, meets a prostitute, and raises her daughter, all while a community of oppressed people are rising up against police tyranny.
The film opens up with a few great shots of New York City.
It finally settles on a high-security prison.
The inmates, mostly black, are all singingย โLook Down.โ
We learn that the one prisoner stole a loaf of bread when he was a teenager and has been in prison ever since. The white cop refers to him as 24601, among other slurs.
Valjean is finally able to escape.
He wanders the city during a montage, while sad music plays. Heโs shown applying for several applications. He has to checkย โYesโ every time that the question asks if heโs ever been convicted. Heโs shown renting a crummy apartment.ย Heโs shown buying a phone and putting the number down on applications. There are several back-to-back shots of him filling out applications and the phone not ringing. Heโs finally kicked out of his apartment.
Heโs seen wandering the streets until a kind man invites him into a homeless shelter. (For some reason, I can see this man being played by Morgan Freeman.) The man gives him something to eat and lets him sleep on a cot for the night. Valjean wakes up, steals something of value, and runs away. He gets about, oh, a block or so before the cops catch up and start brutally beating him. The owner of the homeless shelter races out and vouches for Valjean. Cueย โWhat Have I Done?โ which is sung as a shocked Valjean wanders through the streets of New York City. At long last, he decides to turn his life around. His phone rings.
Transition!
Itโs a few years later.
We see shots of rundown buildings and alleyways filled with the homeless.
The camera finally rests on a really over-crowded factory. It zooms into a window. All of the workers are black. All of the workers are exhausted.
โAt The End Of The Dayโ plays.
Thereโs a fight as the workers slut-shame Francine.
The owner assaults her and fires her when she says that sheโs going to sue.
She goes to a lawyer anyway but the lawyer becomes too preoccupied as he recognizes one of the cops in his hallway. Fantine leaves and we get a bunch of really sad shots of her being forced to sell herself. (โLovely Ladiesโ and โI Dreamed A Dreamโ)
Meanwhile, Valjean has become a moderately successful lawyer (just roll with me here) who is shocked to learn that he has to work with Javert. Javert doesnโt recognize him. Things are still tense. When walking home one night, Valjean stumbles upon Javert arresting Fantine for assaulting a white guy who โmust have taken a wrong turnโ. Valjean realizes that he turned down her case and that this is his fault. He takes her to a low-income hospital.
Meanwhile, Javert says that they finally caught Prisoner 24601. He sends Valjean an email asking Valean to prosecute. Valjean is thrown into an existential crisis. (โWho Am I?โ) He finallyย replies that he cannot and admits everything. He quickly packs up and has just enough time to stop by the hospital and say goodbye to Fantine before Javert shows up.
Thereโs a fight and Valjean escapes.
He runs through the streets of New York City before finally finding an address that Fantine told him. It turns out to be a rundown foster home owned by two drunk, abusive, jerks. Cosette is seen sadly singingย โCastle On A Cloud.โ Valjean takes her away.
Javert is seen walking across the rooftops of New York City, singingย โStarsโ.
Transition!
Okay nowโs where it gets really fun!
You see a bunch of black college students getting together and talking about how much the police brutality is escalating. (โAt The End Of The Day Repriseโ). They finally decide that they need to do something about it. (โRed and Black.โ) Show one of the students, Marius, falling in love with a now grown Cosette.ย โA Heart Full Of Loveโ. Meanwhile, Eponine walks through the rainy streets of New York City and singsย โOn My Own.โ But who cares about her lonely soul, we strive towards a large goal! Meanwhile, the cops know that this group of students are going to start protests so theyโre seen preparing this outrageously militaristic equipment. Show a bunch of back-to-back shots of the students preparing their nonviolent strategies while the cops basically create an army. Have them singย โOne Day Moreโ.
Cut to the next day.
The black college students are having a non-violent sit-in on the streets. They singย โDo You Hear The People Sing?โ Tear gas is thrown by one of the cops. All hell breaks loose. Itโs basically a battle-scene. Theyโre shown running through the streets, facing the horrors, dropping likeย โfliesโ. The police even kill Gavroche. You see shots of social media and the news crews covering whatโs happening. The audience is saying, โWaitโฆโ but itโs all happening so fast that their suspicions cannot be confirmed.ย Valjean is able to get Marius and Cosette to safety. Javert realizes the horror that he has caused and he jumps to his death. Everyone else is killed by the rest of the police.
Transition to a few months later but the brutality is still going on. Valjean dies (โEpilogueโ) while reports are being played of the senseless violence that these unarmed black teenagers faced.
It takes the audience a moment to realize that the reports arenโt fictionalized.
The movie literally ends with real reports by CNN, FOX, ABC, NBC, etc. You see footage of real cops brutalizing real people. All of this is happening asย โDo You Hear The People Sing (Reprise)โ is playingโฆ..
Brings a whole new meaning toย โDo you hear the people sing? / Singing the song of angry men / It is the music of a people / Who will not be slaves againโ, doesnโt it?
I need this in my life.
It is not enough to get into a comfy sleeping position- one must go through several and spin like a rotisserie chicken to arrive at the position you started with.
