hey op good news

DTIY WINNERS

I severely underestimated how difficult it is to actually declare a winner with DTIY. How does one pick a favorite amongst such talented artists.

The most faithful adaption? the most creative? My favorite based on vibes? I will have to go with my gut, but I have updated the prizes to be a little different. Now, even those who didn’t place will get a character portrait, because it was too difficult to decide and I am so fortunate to have so some many participants who took time to draw my OC and Bruno.

First Place: Gwenandy_ on instagram or @gwenandy here (prize: fully rendered scene)

I struggled to choose, but ultimately I chose Gwenandy for being both close to the spirit of the original, but added so much more story. Including cheeky little emotional insets to highlight their reactions better and the addition of the picture reels full of my own Bruno and Elena images to give a real poster like quality to the whole composition. Thank you Gwen and congratulations.

Second Place: Adainisart

Prize is a fully rendered character portrait

Close to the spirit, and yet made a call back to a different artwork where Bruno and Elena are dressed to the nines enjoying a rooftop dance. I love the sweet way Adainisart drew Elena especially with their stylistic curl at the end of lips of their style. Congratulations Adainisart!

Prize is a fully rendered character portrait

Rendered in gorgeous lovingly drawn details, Shadeink2020 has the closest to the original and yet highlighted the symbolism of butterflies as a motif. As well as alluding to a story that gave the piece a deeper meaning. Thank you Shadeink!

Runner ups: character portraits in monochrome or flat color.

Thank you runner ups! You Will all receive a character portrait in flat color!

Beloved runners ups!

Congratulations! 🎊

Lots of thoughts recently. Everything feels plastic.

I could go on and on about why all that AI "art" is bad. I could mention theft, lack of creativity, it's impact on the work field and environment, but countless people have already said all that. I wanted to touch on something that to me is the most utterly wrong about all of it.

Art is more than just something pretty to look at or listen to. It's therapeutic. It's a form of communication. A tool for human connection. It's a pure, human need.

The modern notion that sex and pregnancy aren't connected to one another has done untold damage to the people of this world.

Like. People aren't sex dolls that you can use and then throw away as you please. They are people and there are natural consequences of this kind of behavior. Some of them (like getting pregnant) are the natural result of sex, some are the result of sleeping around specifically (like broken relationships & STDs), and some (like abortion and broken households) are the results of people trying to avoid the consequences of their actions.

Sex is the font of life through which new human beings are brought into the world, and the refusal to accept this truth has caused so much death and heartache. The divine is not meant to be abused as such, and it shows.

one of the most boring lessons I’ve learned is that when a task feels overwhelming, you just have to start doing it. Even if you’re not sure how to do 90% of it, look for one small component that seems close and start there. Sometimes it’s reading one article on the topic, or searching one related term, or literally just googling how to do the task. Do anything other than thinking about it. The process of working on a thing inherently makes it less scary.

Exactly

Ok, I just have to interject here because if you’ve heard anything about this movie, you know that Disney did NOT know how to market it and really sold it as a family-friendly romp (hence the George Constanta gargoyle). Kid-friendly publicity up the wazoo. Hand puppets from Burger King.

I was six years old when Hunchback came out. My mother took me to the movie theater in the mall to see it, and they had set up a giant Notre Dame display in the middle of the mall, where every half hour or so a group of performers would sing the Feast of Fools while multicolored confetti rained down on the crowd. It was the most colorful, manically enthusiastic thing I’d ever seen. THEN, I was brought into the theater and witnessed the darkest film about a crisis of faith and lust that ever inflicted on a first grader.

I have no memory of what I thought of the film. What I DO remember is wandering listlessly through the confetti in the mall after the fact in a complete daze, having an existential crisis, while my mother asked what was wrong because she was convinced there was something medically wrong with me.

To reiterate, one of my first, most vivid memories is being emotionally scarred by this movie.

They also used real Latin prayers for the choral parts:

  1. Dies Irae & Kyrie Eleison
  1. Confiteor & Kyrie Eleison
  1. Te Deum & Libera Me

hey goyim you don't know what zionism is stop saying it

zionism is not:

-murder all Palestinians!

-conquer Gaza!

-Jewish fascism

zionism is:

-an umbrella term for a vague but inherently Jewish ideology

-intrinsic to Judaism

-a belief in the Jewish homeland in historic Judea and Samaria, now known as Israel

-a yearning to live safe and free in that homeland

Jews are naturally argumentative with each other. we debate and disagree constantly and love each other for it. there are almost as many interpretations of, and approaches to zionism as there are Jews. for most of us zionism is peacefully living alongside the Palestinian people in our shared homeland. for most of us it's just Jewish safety, freedom, and self-determination in our indigenous lands. for most of us it's just living in a place where we won't be killed just for being Jewish.

for an extreme minority of Jews (such as Benjamin Netanyahu), it's twisted into some kind of violent pseudo-fascism.

But overall, zionism is a Jewish term for a Jewish concept and when Jews tell you you're using it wrong the right thing to do is to fucking stop and correct yourself.

I'm an anarchist, I believe in freedom and self-determination for all peoples and hope for a world in which we don't need the apparatus of the state to ensure that for anyone. I also believe in Jewish freedom, safety, and self-determination in our ancestral lands alongside the Palestinians who also call the land home.

my personal philosophy is best described as anarcho-zionism (with communist/primitivist leanings but we don't need to get into that now).

but yeah. you don't get to tell Jews what our words mean so fucking stop. and if you're frothing at the mouth to misbehave at me right now because of this post then you're only proving my point.

rant over I guess.

am Yisrael chai.

This person is absolutely right to me Zionism just means a home for Jews that DOESN’T hurt others and it does NOT mean a fascist state that believes in “Jew supremacy”. I am tired of people telling me what “Zionist” means when they just learned about it after October 7 whereas I’ve been learning about this my entire life. Please stay safe out there—both my Jewish, Muslim and other non-Jewish friends.

Just to be clear, and so I as a gentile can learn how to be specific and support my Jewish and Palestinian friends, is there specific language (ideological, theoretical, institutional) that refers to these definitional differences? Because what Israel is doing right now is built on a very specific, politically statist and explicitly colonialist ideological framework, with what I'm sure are complex roots. As it stands, Israel is paradigmatic of (big M) Modern colonial state-building mechanisms and practices. Given the differences in these interpretations of Zionism, where could I find resources that explore the divergence of the radically different frameworks laid out here (and how they have historically interacted)?

Zionism is an idea that can be implemented in different ways. It pre dates the existence of the modern state of Israel and it pre dates the existence of Theodore Herzl.

This type of Zionism, the type that supports harm to Palestinians, is called Kahanism.

It is named after Reb Meir Kahane. Kahane was not necessarily involved in 1948 and the Nakba but he is the poster child for the racist, anti-Palestinian ideology that has made things increasingly worse since its rise to power roughly after the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. We use Kahanist to describe that element in Israeli society and outside of it.

But if you think Jews moving to Eretz Yisrael, our ancestral and indigenous homeland, is colonialism we are never going to be able to have a conversation. We can talk about the parallels between the Nakba and events related to settler colonialism because they’re there. We can talk about how the language that political Zionists used was very colonial in nature and almost definitely inspired by the European colonial world they lived in. But this movement to pretend that Jews are foreign to Eretz Yisrael and cannot be there is harmful and false, and that is what I will always pick a fight with.

some good tags

The correct word for what the Israeli far right is doing would definitely not be Colonialism (which is heavily loaded with implications of a native/non-native dichotomy, in which people with no history or cultural ties to a land take it over for resources or to expand an empire); it’s Irredentism and Revanchism, which are annexation aimed at, respectively, returning/reunifying previously held land/scattered people, and revenge for previous grievances/injustices.

The Israeli far right is not trying to conquer random lands. Their expansionism is directed at a specific vision of a “Greater Israel” in which Jews hold sovereignty over all land that was previously within the borders of the unified Kingdom of Israel (Irredentism), and their anti-Muslim & anti-Arab bigotry is rooted in a desire for revenge for violence & oppression Jews have suffered from Muslims & Arabs (Revanchism).
