I think it’s frankly rather odd that fics don’t address more frequently Charles learning that Edwin’s death was a hate crime, too.

Because Edwin tells him up front that he was murdered by bullies, but for obvious reasons does not tell him why. He seems to have been pretty firmly closeted right up until Port Townsend. It’s conceivably possible he could have told Charles something like “I was killed because they perceived me as an [outdated term]”, but I think incredibly unlikely because he would not want to open that door in Charles’s perception of him (or his own perception of himself, either, frankly), among other reasons.

It’s significantly more likely that Charles figured that out on his own. I grew up in the ‘90s and 2000s, and boys were still being killed for acting like Edwin does, violently physically bullying people for that was still fully standard behavior. (And against perceived-girls who acted in the equivalent opposite fashion, but that’s a separate matter.) Charles certainly knew enough bullies and knew enough about social dynamics to identify that if Edwin was showing the mannerisms when alive that he does when dead, the bullies Charles knew might’ve killed him for it.

But, like, there’s a difference between part of you knowing that with plausible deniability (maybe they were just Like That in Edwardian times, maybe that was part of it but also Edwin has those Vibes that also drive bullies to people [those Vibes being autism vibes but Charles wouldn’t know that], and simply harshly repressing his awareness of what all that suggests about Edwin for a wide variety of reasons both historical and relational) - there’s a difference between that and being told, explicitly, that your best friend was murdered by people chanting a homophobic slur.

And, I dunno, I think it’s interesting that doesn’t come up more.

WIP Word Train (x29)

Rules: Tagger gives a word, then for each letter of that word you share a sentence/excerpt from your WIPs that starts with that letter.

Thank you to @makemeimmortalwithahug for the tag with the word CRASH! You are getting snippets from one of my unreleased modern au fics, so enjoy!

C - Charles had tried to get more information out of her, anything that she was willing to share, but she had kept her lips tight, citing the fact that she wasn’t actually able to hand out private information like that to him.

R -  Right, they’d been reading.

A - And Charles hated the way he called him Charlie, the way he acted like it was actually his nickname or that he had any right to use any sort of nickname.

S - Simon, his friends, Danny– hell Charles would kick his own ass if it would fix this mess.

H - He sounded far more like himself, still tired and a bit pained but so much like Edwin Charles nearly cried.

Welcome to the DBDA Comment Festival!

Want to give more love to fanfic authors? Want to create a deeper sense of community by talking to the people sharing their works with you? Well then, welcome to the Dead Boy Detective Agency weekly comment festival, which will run for a year, from the first anniversary of the release of the show until the second!

Every week, starting on the 25th of April, there will be three levels and three chances to drop a comment (though, of course, you're always encouraged to leave as many comments as you're able to on the works you read). This blog will be generally safe for work, but beyond that no tags, headcanons, ships, or characters are excluded from the event, so if a given comment prompt doesn't work for you that week, just skip it! This is a no pressure, no obligation, year-long festival—there will be plenty of chances for you to leave comments on other works!

The comment prompts will be graded by how "easy" it is to find works that fit that prompt and will be one of the following types: fic rating; fic category; character tags; relationship tags; freeform tags; fic status; fic word count; date updated.

Level 1 prompts are (relatively) common for Dead Boy Detectives. These are things as simple as comment on a completed work, to the Edwin/Charles tag, to fics rated T. Level 2 prompts are less common, but still relatively prevalent. Expect things like the Crystal/Charles relationship tag, the Simon character tag, and the F/F category. Finally, level 3 comment prompts are the rarer ones in the fandom. You'll be prompted to comment on things like works that have over a hundred thousand words, or the Esther Finch & Monty relationship tag, or the Mystery tag.

This year long event is geared toward commenting on fics on AO3, but it's not restricted to that. Obviously, some things will be specific to AO3 tags and the way the archive is set up, but if you want to leave a comment on a F/F gifset, or fanart about Simon, here on tumblr, please do so, and feel free to count it as part of this challenge! Also, feel free to use the comment prompts at any time, don't feel the need to be restricted to the current week's prompts (and if you want to use the comment prompts as a writing/art prompt, go ahead!).

Once you've left your comment, feel free to share what work you commented on with this blog to be further shared with the community, either by tagging @dbdaweeklycomments, using the #DBDA Comment Festival tag, replying to the weekly challenge post, dropping it in submissions, direct messaging, etc.

That's a long intro, but hopefully it answers most questions! Now, enjoy the fandom, enjoy the community, and get out there and talk to people, even if you're just leaving a 💖 on those fics!

Charles tilts back against the wall, panting breaths his ghostly body doesn’t need, a hand pressed against Edwin’s chest holding Edwin against the brick next to him. He leans to the side, darting a look around the corner, then jerks back hard enough to knock him into Edwin’s side.

“How does it look?”

“Not great, I’m gonna be honest.”

“Hmm.”

Edwin’s brows are furrowed, he’s glaring at the ground, and Charles recognizes the signs of his brain over-heating, and then he remembers something from about a decade ago.

“What if - what about the Silver and Steel Technique, from the Case of the Bumbling Brownie?”

Edwin’s head whips up. “No.”

“You said yourself, it’s easily confused. We just need to dazzle it a little, long enough to get across to the summoning circle. It’s our best play, mate.”

“Absolutely not.”

Charles grins at Edwin, whose eyes widen, and he dodges back right as Edwin grabs for him, right into full sight of the monster.

Charles looks twenty feet up at the monster, then back at Edwin, then back at the monster, and raises his hands high.

Let’s do the fork in the garbage disposal!

Edwin lets out what Charles is fairly certain is a string of very foul curses in Aramaic but before the monster can lunge, Edwin’s at Charles’s side, matching Charles’s pose, arms in the air, hands waving, hips swaying back and forth, feet hopping, body spinning.

“Ding ding ding da-ding ding da-ding ding!”

“Ding ding ding da-ding ding da-ding ding!”

chapter 6 of amnesia edwin au, twist of fate is up now!

“You’re gonna hate this, mate,” Charles warned. Which seemed pointless, really, because Edwin had already hated everything about this. It was Hell, after all, no one ever enjoyed it.

“What?” Edwin asked, struggling to get his breath back. The second he did, he was almost certain to run again, and Charles couldn’t have that.

Charles brought his bag around the front of him. Edwin hated being inside the bag, but he figured it would be preferable to being left in Hell. A trade off they could both live with, really.

“I’m sorry,” Charles said before swiftly shoving the bag over Edwin’s head and scooping him up inside.

Crocheted myself a Ghost Postman!

His little hat and bag are removable, and there’s room in his mailbag for some letters.

This was my first time using glow in the dark yarn, and it glows way better than I thought it would!

Hat details based off of this pic from the Instagram of the Ghost Postman himself, Kevin Davey! https://www.instagram.com/p/C6pKJ4TSip2/?igsh=cjJiZ3lnZGJydXdn

Up next: Charles and Edwin!!

you just simply cannot convince me otherwise that Charles “…why’d you say it like that ☹️” Rowland isn’t a sensitive bab

WIP Word Train (x28)

Rules: tagger gives a word, then for each letter of that word you share a sentence/excerpt from your wips that start with that letter.

Thank you to @genevievefangirl how tagging me! The word I was giving was RAPIER (and I was cursing the Rs the entire time lol!)

This one comes from one of my current FTH fics so enjoy the sneak peek lol

R -  “Right. Okay, that makes sense, I guess,” Charles said. “Do you have your phone now?”

A - Any other time Charles would have said that he was studying his hands, but it was obvious from the look on his face that there were no thoughts going on in Edwin’s head.

P - People died from a lack of sleep just as much as they would die from a lack of food or water.

I - It reminded Charles of all those World War II movies where they showed men healing in hospital beds, and Charles had to blink the image of Edwin wounded in war out of his head.

E - Edwin Payne felt like he was dying.

R - Right. Because the first time he’d been carried by them it had been to the basement with a blindfold on.

thank you for the tag! now I am no stress tagging @ghostinthelibrarywrites and @arrow-jsy
