Edit: First of all, thank you all for your participation ❤️ You managed to gather over 100 responses during the last 12 hours. I did not expect such a great turnout but as always the fan communities on Tumblr did not let me down, thank you once again.

Due to the number of responses, I have to close the survey sooner than I expected.

I wish you all the best and I hope that the good vibes you gave me come back to you ❤️

Hi, I'm looking for people willing to participate in my BA research. It is a survey about how being in fandom influences motivation towards learning English.

If you have some time to spare, English is not your first language but you are more or less actively involved in any fan activities in English, please take a moment to help me (I would also appreciate it if you shared the link with your friends that could help 😉)

What's this now? Age-gatekeeping and keeping the fandom elders and the fandom founders out but allowing 11-year-old children in? What's the basis for choosing this rather odd age range?

I study English teaching and the thesis is about how fandom motivates adolescents and young adults to learn English. I do not intend to exclude anyone from the research but since the age group is set by the thesis topic I had to include some age group in the description of the study.

If anyone felt offended or hurt by this age restriction then I am really sorry

But if you filled the questionnaire then you know that there is an age option for people older than 40 years old as I know that their experience is as valuable as experience of people in the ages between 11 and 40

If the questionnaire says "If you are between 11 and 40" I certainly would not fill it out, nor did I, because it doesn't make any sense because I'm not the target audience. However, it also does not make sense to label 40-year-old adults as "young adults" - the young adult label usually applies to people somewhere between 18 and 27/28, not to someone around 40 who rather would be considered a full ass adult, but off I go, I guess.

Also, most apps, including Tumblr, have a general age minimum of 13 because that's the age at which parental permission isn't necessary anymore. I don't know if the questionnaire asks for an email or automatically provides you with the email of the participants, but the European Data Protection Regulation also forbids the processing of children's personal data (read anyone under 13) and an email address is considered personal data by now. The same applies to the United States' Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) btw.

To clarify further

The age group is set the way it is due to the research procedures and discussion with my thesis advisor. This is just a BA thesis so to make it as simple and coherent we wanted to gather responses mostly from tenageers and young adults. To accommodate adult members of the fandom I added age options 30-34, 35-39, and 40+ as I did not expect that people from this last age group would be as willing to fill in the questionnaire as teenagers or young adults.

I am aware that according to many social media policies users should be at least 13 years old to sign up but the questionnaire was distributed not only through social media means

As for the personal data, I do not have access to this. The survey is anonymous and voluntary, google forms may ask you to log in or automatically log you in (honestly do not know how this works) but again I do not have any insight into this data. The only info about participants I have is their age, nationality, and first language - all for statistical purposes.

For anyone hurt by my survey, I did not intend to do so. This is my first time doing such a thing and apparently, I wasn't aware of all the problems that could have appeared.

If you have any further remarks feel free to share as I understand that constructive criticism is a crucial part of the learning process 🤍
