Honestly they didn't even have to make a big deal out of it. Casually canon destiel would have been so good.

Like imagine if, the episode started in the bunker, Sam hunched over a laptop, clearly not having slept. It's 6AM. We see Dean come in in his pjs, looking disheveled, nod at Sam and grunt in acknowledgment. He sits down across from Sam.

"You sleep?" "No. Research. You?" Dean smiles. "No." He gets up and goes to the kitchen to make more coffee as Sam rolls his eyes.

Cas comes in, no trench coat. "Hey Cas. What do you make of this?" Cas comes and stands behind Sam, eyes narrowed at the screen. Dean comes back with two cups of coffee, hands one to Cas. Ruffles his hair a bit. Cas smiles softly, and turns back to the screen.

Sam gives Dean a look of disgust that only a younger sibling could give. Dean throws a ball of paper at him.

They don't talk about it. It's just happening. In the background. The show doesn't have to be ABOUT it.

just. the contrast between cas first communicating with dean in such a deafening, piercing way and. the complete and utter silence that lingers after he speaks his last words to him.
