BREAKING NEWS: Blondie have announced the death of drummer Clem Burke, aged 70, following a battle with cancer.

In a statement, Blondie’s Debbie Harry and Chris Stein announced: “It is with profound sadness that we relay news of the passing of our beloved friend and bandmate Clem Burke following a private battle with cancer.”

Clem Burke was important to Blondie as he was recruited by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein when Blondie was first forming in 1974, and he joined Blondie in early 1975. He was a key figure in keeping the group together after Stein and Harry considered disbanding, following the departure of original bassist Fred Smith to Television; Burke recruited his friend Gary Valentine to play bass. Clam was a great drummer and just the man for the job - his style of playing was influenced by Hal Blaine, Keith Moon, Ringo Starr, and Earl Palmer.
