not-new movies I watched for first time in 2024, separated by loose categories

movies I forgot to watch during my formative middle school/high school/college years released during my formative middle school/high school/college years:

Cruel Intentions (1999) 3/4 stars* *and this happened to me, @theseformerthings on Instagram

But I’m A Cheerleader (1998) 3/4 stars - a delight

Josie and the Pussycats (2001) 3/4 stars - a delight

The Mummy (1999) 3/4 stars - a delight

Hackers (1995) 3/4 stars - peak mid-nineties aesthetic of a certain type you’ll instantly remember. a fun time capsule

horror/horror adjacent:

Alien 4/4 stars (1979) - what a woman.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 3/4 stars - what a high school girl (pos!)

The Lost Boys (1987) 3/4 stars - incredibly entertaining. the only major flaw(s) can be found here.

Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) 2/4 stars - not as fun as I was expecting but I know it’s a pioneering classic for a reason!

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) 3/4 stars - brutal yet surprisingly beautiful/artful also. Never seen anything like it.

Ed Wood (1994) - 4/4 stars. hilarious.

The Love Witch (2016) - 4/4 stars. equally hilarious and strange.

how did I watch and immediately fall in love with The Insider in 1999 and not see this legal tour de force until 2024:

Michael Clayton (2007) 4/4 stars - newly obsessed, newly converted Michael Clayton Head

classics on the Criterion Channel:

Detour (1945) 3/4 stars - gritty, ugly, strange enough to be worth the watch

High Sierra (1941) 3/4 stars - if you like Bogie

Le Samouraï (1967) 4/4 stars

The Cassandra Cat (1963) 4/4 stars

History is Made At Night (1937) 4/4 stars - utterly delightful AND unusual (genre-defying) rom-com

miscellaneous:

Time Bandits (1981) 2/4 stars - too frenetic for me

All That Jazz (1979) 4/4 - brilliant and sort of infuriating

A Room With A View (1985) 4/4 - predictably gorgeous, romantic and witty

look at these lovely Venetian glasses from the 17th century.
