Why Your Words Sound Fancy or Folksy

Here’s a fun quirk of English: if you strip away the Germanic words, your sentences start to sound formal and elegant. But remove the Latin-based words? Suddenly, it’s all down-to-earth and chummy. Let’s play with this:

Latin-heavy: I desire to commence a conversation regarding your recent acquisition. Germanic-heavy: I want to start a talk about what you just got.

The first feels like it’s wearing a suit; the second is in sweatpants.

So next time you need to sound fancy, lean on Latin. For a pub vibe? Go full Germanic. Both are legit, but the vibe’s the fun part! 🌟

Sorry-not-sorry to infodump on your post, op, but I am delighted that you brought this up so I can share some linguistics info.

The reason the English language works this way is because while it is a Germanic language, for a very long time England was ruled by people who spoke Latin or a Romance language as their native language. Old English, for reasons debated by linguists and historians, didn't retain much Latin after the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain, but when the Normans took control they almost exclusively spoke an early form of French while the majority of the population still spoke Old English. Middle and Early Modern English incorporated a lot of Old French loanwords throughout their development, but those tended to be for things that were of interest to the upper/ruling classes (beef, pork, poultry, and mutton for types of meat) while the Germanic words were retained for things that were of interest to the working class (cow, pig, chicken, sheep for animals).

Despite English becoming the dominant language over time, these distinctions in vocabulary remained, probably in no small part due to Latin being the common language of European scholarship and its ecclesiastical use for centuries upon centuries. A Latin-heavy vocabulary has historically and continues to indicate that someone is highly educated and implies a certain amount of formality, while a Germanic-heavy vocabulary comes across as less stuffy because it's typically spoken in less formal settings.

No. 7: quality time is a good way to say “I care about you”

Do you know that weird feeling when you want to give someone special something to relief their suffering but simply your body doesn’t move, your optics become blurry and the same is like that same suffering invades you and yet not because you can understand it means you know how to solve it? Is more like if that weird feeling just paralyzes you and now you can’t do anything for that person, like, anything, literally you don’t do anything, just ignore the feeling until it goes away or until that someone feels better. Do you know that feeling? That feeling of believing things will change or that person will be better without your intervention, and yet nothing happens? Everything is the same and the only thing you can do is to wait for everything to pass away believing everything will go back to normal by itself but it doesn’t do that, like if it only gets worse

Everyday only gets worse

Sissi passed most of nights in the rescue team’s ship, Blurr thought maybe she couldn’t handle those “nightmares” anymore and went for help, she didn’t had to do anything, it resolved itself, well, someone else resolved it

Chase was a good bot, and even if Blurr wasn’t interested in becoming a rescue bot, she spied on him during all missions with Cody, she at least was entertained and it was interesting, and he knew but didn’t cared, it resolved by itself

Cody sometimes told in general that things weren’t okay, but the rest of his family and the other bots could help, even Salvage and Sissi were good at it, another problem that Blurr didn’t needed to help

But this?

Salvage was made a pool of tears since the last two days, all because she thought everything would resolve itself, someday Boulder would forget about the painting meanwhile that canvas rotted on the floor of Blurr and Salvage’s ship, but it didn’t, Boulder found about it, she even thought Boulder would say sorry about it because she thought Boulder a “kind spark, and couldn’t even do any wrong” but WRONG, Boulder treated Salvage on a way not even the rest of the team thought it was possible for them, like, seriously? Nobody except, coincidentally Salvage, made Boulder be that angry? She didn’t thought it was possible, or maybe Boulder wasn’t that soft spark everyone told they were, and yet she thought Salvage would ignore that shitty feeling but didn’t, it had passed two fragging days since that happened and yet Salvage still felt guilty and that aft-pain of a rescue bot haven’t even apologized a shit

And yet Blurr waited for it to solve itself, it was way too much to handle anymore, she started to feel tired, but it was still her dearest friend, her only friend in the world, she shouldn’t just let him down but her processor couldn’t react anymore to his cry, she was starting to feel sick even believing it wasn’t okay to feel like that when the only bot she has left is suffering. But she couldn’t handle with this shit anymore
