1. Do the mono-poly relationships have different boundaries than the poly-poly-poly-poly-etc. relationships? Sort of. Basically, no. Riley has told Drake that she’s open to him exploring with other people. He does not want to. However, she does get more jealous of any perceived attention Drake gets or gives to other women precisely because she knows he is monogamous. Liam being physically attracted to someone else isn’t a threat to their relationship, but Drake being might be. The main boundary difference is that Riley is not likely to even flirt with an outsider around Drake, because it tweaks his insecurities. They have more of a don’t ask don’t tell dynamic around anything Riley does when not with him. This does not include Liam and Max, as they all live together, but Drake has dealt with his insecurities around them.
2. How well do the metamours get along? Do they even know each other? Drake lives with Riley and Liam and Max. He was best friends with Liam before either met Riley. He knew Max and tolerated him. His relationship with Max has developed into a real friendship now. Rashad is outside the quad that are nesting partners, but he gets along well with everyone but Drake. Rashad and Drake’s issues are largely because they have different outlooks on life and neither understands Riley’s affection for the other. Riley knows about Rashad’s prolific dating life and may know many of them superficially as they run in the same social circles.
3. Do any of the metamours dislike each other? How does that impact their shared partner(s)? Yes. Drake and Rashad. They maintain a cool politeness when forced to interact. It only affects Riley in as much as it annoys her when they snipe at each other.
4. Do any of the metamours hang out when their shared partner(s) aren’t around? Yes. Once the first baby came along, Drake started hanging out a lot more with Max while they collaborated on child care so Riley and Liam could get some rest. Plus Max just bulldozed his way into a relationship by insisting they were best friend and trying to mother Drake, which Drake grumbles about but secretly has come to appreciate. Drake and Liam have always hung out together.
5. Do any of the metamours have specific dynamics and/or boundaries with each other? Why? Yes. While Riley and Liam dabble in some light dom/sub dynamics with each of them being a switch, Riley and Max have a full-fledged Domme/Sub dynamic complete with him being collared by her. Why? Because he is into that and others aren’t. Max also enjoys being topped by Liam, but as the three of them are a fully functioning throuple, a boundary had to be put in place that when all three play together, Max obeys Riley, as it’s hard for a sub to obey two masters. As Liam and Riley are officially married, being collared by her in a collaring ceremony has a deeply emotional significance to Max, making him feel like a full partner in her life, not secondary to Liam.
6. How do the members feel about marriage? Do they live in a society that recognizes polyamorous marriage at all? If marriage isn’t an option, what about legal protections? So far it is not legal, but since this is a fictional county which Liam runs, I have toyed with the idea of making it so. Riley never cared about marriage, didn’t really believe in it, but she is deeply committed to those she loves and Liam was required to be married to ascend the throne, so she married him. Drake didn’t care about being married, but did struggle with Riley marrying someone else as his half American heritage made him more conservative in outlook about such things. There was a several chapter arc where he struggled to overcome this, even leaving for awhile but eventually coming back and making it work.
7. What do any monogamous members think about their polyamorous partner potentially marrying someone else (either in addition to or instead of them)? As stated above, Drake spiraled out about it. She almost lost him, but they eventually worked through it.
8. How does the polycule celebrate anniversaries? Each individually and also, Liam, Riley and Max have a mutual anniversary of the date they officially became a throuple.
9. How does the polycule celebrate birthdays? There is always some type of celebration, even for Drake, who absolutely doesn’t want one.
10. If one of the members gets sick, who takes care of them? Is there a rotation of caretakers lining up, or designated partner(s)? Ooooh, good question and one I have not explored! In general, Max is the caretaker. He works from home when possible and does the bulk of the child care while the other nesting partners are at work, so he would be the obvious one to caretake a sick member. If Max gets sick, it would be whoever could get away from work easiest that particular day.

1. Are any of the polycule members aromantic? How does that influence their relationship boundaries and their relationship to polyamory in general? No. But Riley’s best friend, Hana is aromantic. They slept together once. It didn’t disrupt their friendship but it’s why Liam didn’t like her in the beginning.
2. Are any of the polycule members asexual? How does that influence their relationship boundaries and their relationship to polyamory in general? No.
3. Do any of the polycule members consider their relationship(s) to be queerplatonic? How does that influence their relationship boundaries and their relationship to polyamory in general? Nope.
4. How have their members’ respective family relationships influenced their polyamorous dynamics? I haven’t explored this in Bad Romance, but in Complicated, while they are navigating things, Drake finds out that his parents had an open marriage and it shocked him.
5. Were any of the members raised in a polyamorous family? No.
6. Are any of the polycule members parents? How many kids do they have? Oh, yes. Most of them at this point. Riley has five children. Liam is the father of two of them. Drake, Max and Rashad each fathered one. Rashad never wanted children, the youngest child (his) was not on purpose. He is around sporadically and has willingly given the role of father over to the men who are Riley’s nesting partners. I have toyed with the idea of either Liam or Drake having a woman show up with a child of theirs and see how that goes.
7. If there aren’t any kids yet, will there ever be? See above answer.
8. How would the polycule deal with one member wanting kids, but another member never wanting kids? It was never a problem because Rashad doesn’t live with Riley nor do they see each other daily or even weekly. His lack of wanting children didn’t affect her at all. Liam always wanted kids. Drake never actively wanted them, but he wasn’t opposed to having them.
9. If the relationship opened up after children were already in the picture, how was the change explained to them? Was it explained at all? This polycule was in place before any children came along. They have always had three fathers, it’s normal to them. Since Liam and Riley are the king and queen of Cordonia, this isn’t public knowledge and I have toyed with the idea of writing about one of the kids having issues with it as he comes of age and maybe isn’t super cool with not being able to acknowledge who his biological father is.
10. Do all members of the polycule raise children together, or are there designated “parent” members? The four members that are nesting partners (Riley, Drake, Max and Liam) all function as parents. They make no distinction between whose child is whose. They all parent but Max takes on the bulk of the child care, working from home, overseeing tutors and private lessons, making breakfast, etc.

1. How intense does each member feel compersion toward their partners and metamours? Max feels it very strongly, he really just wants everyone to be happy, followed by Rashad. Riley and Liam feel it a moderate amount mostly within the polycule, but they still get jealous over attention toward potential romantic interests outside the polycule. I’d say Drake might not feel it much at all.
2. Who has the strongest communication skills in the group? Who has the weakest? Liam has excellent communication skills in the political world but struggles more with interpersonal communication. Riley, Max and Rashad are strong communicators. Drake is on the struggle bus.
3. Who does the most scheduling out of all the members? Riley, as she has the most partners.
4. How do they deal with feelings of loneliness if their partner(s) are spending time with their other partner(s)? Riley struggles least because she has the most partners and so is most likely to be able to distract herself with someone else. Liam buries himself in work. Max maintains an active social life and has more varied interests than the others so he can distract himself fairly easily. Drake hits the gym, the gun range or a fishing pier. Or, sometimes the whiskey.
5. Does the polycule ever have get-togethers or dates where everyone is present? What are they like? Yes. Boisterous. Lol.
6. Of the members who live together, what are the household dynamics like? How do they split chores, manage finances, etc.? Well, Liam is richer than God, so finances aren’t a problem. They all live at the palace with maids and chefs, so chores aren’t a big issue. Max however does prefer to do a lot of the cooking regardless and they are all hands on with the children, not really using nannies. Since Liam and Riley have an entire country to run and Drake is busy keeping all of them safe, Max takes on the bulk of the domestic stuff like making everyone’s lunches and working from home so he can be with the kids more. Max does a lot of little acts of service for the other members of the polycule, including Drake (who is his meta, not a partner) because it’s his love language.
7. Of the members who live together, do they all sleep in one bed too? All separate bedrooms? Something in-between? Something in between. Liam, Riley and Max share the master bedroom and the double king bed. Max has a separate bedroom but rarely uses it. Drake has his own bedroom as he is the straight and mono member although he has slept in the big bed with everyone for various reasons, like on a movie night or just to cuddle or because he fell asleep there while taking care of the baby.
8. What are their sexual dynamics like? Is group sex frequent, or is it purely one-on-one? Group sex is frequent for Riley, Liam and Max. There has been one foursome where Drake did participate but only interacted sexually with Riley. Riley and Drake are ninety percent one on one though she has invited Siobhan along a time or two. Riley and Rashad are one on one. Liam does carve out individual time for both Max and Riley.
9. Do boundaries shift depending on which partners are involved in sex or romance? Absolutely! In and out of the bedroom Max is submissive. Liam and Riley are both switches. But boundaries did have to be discussed and set for threesomes because Max can’t obey two masters at the same time. Liam and Max have their own dynamic separate from the way it goes when all three are together and the same for Liam and Riley and Max and Riley. I would say Riley and Max have a very playful dynamic while Riley and Drake have an intense physical connection. Liam and Riley have a complicated relationship full of a lot of push and pull. Riley and Rashad connect on an intellectual level and love experiencing cultural events together.
10. What kind of boundaries exist outside of a romantic dynamic? Are friends-with-benefits considered metamours? Hook-ups? So far the only consistent FWB is Siobhan. I would say she’s gradually become seen as a meta. Hook ups are strictly on a don’t ask, don’t tell basis. Expect for Max. Riley tells Max literally everything.

1. Have any of the members been in a hierarchical polycule before? I honestly haven’t explored this. Riley, Liam and Drake were not practicing polyamory prior to this dynamic. Rashad is solo-poly. That leaves Max and Siobhan. But I’m going with no.
2. Have any of the members been in a non-hierarchical polycule before? Yes. Max and Siobhan.
3. Do any of the members have a preference between hierarchical and non-hierarchical polyamory? Liam definitely prefers hierarchical, with him at the top.
4. What’s the craziest polycule drama they’ve experienced so far? Someone taking and leaking photos of Liam with another woman, in order to cause a scandal. Or maybe the time they got stuck in LA so Liam took everyone to Disney Land where Riley gave birth after refusing to admit that she was in labor. Or maybe the entire origin story where Liam blackmailed Riley with a marriage contract.
5. Have any of the members been the unicorn of a relationship? Maybe Max.
6. Have any of the members been unicorn hunters in the past? Were they successful? I don’t know if it’s quite the same, but Riley did push Liam and Max toward each other to cement a throuple and alleviate Liam’s jealously.
7. How does each member like to engage with their metamours? Do they want to meet every potential addition, or do they not care at all? For the primary quad plus Rashad and Siobhan, they are all kitchen table poly. Outside of that, Riley prefers not to meet them as Liam’s hookups are all one night stands (though now I’m having an idea for what happens if one becomes more than that), and Rashad’s are all short term relationships. Although she did hand pick a date for him once, only to end up getting jealous of said date (partially written, not posted yet). Drake would rather not know. Max not only is open to meeting everyone, but is happy to follow Riley or Liam along into a threesome.  
8. What are their “vetoes” for potential metamours? Do they have any at all? If Liam had veto power, he’d use it on everyone. There is no set rule for veto power, but if one member strongly opposed someone, that would likely be enough. Although this is now giving me more story ideas, lol.
9. Which of the members want to live with their partner(s), and which prefer to live alone? Rashad prefers to live alone. He does not want marriage or children or any of the things that come with the relationship escalator. Liam, Max and Riley live together with Max spending most nights in the same bed as Riley and Liam who share a bedroom. Drake lives with them, but has his own bedroom.
10. How do each of the members deal with jealousy? How intense is the feeling? So jealousy was the main driver of the plot of Bad Romance. No one dealt with is well. Bad Romance was a toxic hot mess that somehow, through the love they had for each other, turned into a fairly functional polycule. They had to learn communication and compromise. Liam, Riley and Drake are the ones that get jealous and I would say it was very intense in the beginning but got better. Now if there is an outburst, they will calm down and talk it out.

1. How many members are in the polycule? How are they related to each other? Feel free to draw a flowchart. I think that I already answered this here in depth, so I’ll try to stay brief. There are five primary members: Liam, Drake, Max, Riley, and Rashad. Six if you count Siobhan, an OC I made up that in my mind is still around, but I haven’t really written much about her. Riley and Liam are married and they are the king and queen of Cordonia. Riley, Max, and Liam are a throuple. Max is officially Riley’s personal assistant and top royal advisor. Drake is only with Riley romantically. Drake and Liam are best friends and have been since childhood. Drake is the head of Riley’s Queen’s Guard. Rashad was originally Liam’s friend but is now Riley’s lover and her personal lawyer. Liam and Rashad are still friendly, but Drake and Rashad do not like each other. Siobhan is Riley’s friend with benefits. Siobhan and Drake have been intimate with each other in a threesome with Riley. I might expand on that relationship, eventually. Hana is Riley’s best friend. They slept together once, but it didn’t affect their friendship. Hana is aromantic. She and Liam actively dislike each other, but try to get along for Riley’s sake.
2. Did the relationship start polyamorous, or was it a monogamous relationship that eventually opened? Oh, it started monogamously with Riley breaking up with Max to date Liam, then descended into a toxic hot mess when Liam broke her heart but then refused to let her go (there was an iron-clad marriage contract involved).
3. If it started monogamous, how did the process of opening the relationship go? Well, basically Riley just did whatever she wanted and tried her best to push Liam away. He refused to be pushed though and eventually agreed to a Cordonian Arrangement (a clause added to the marriage contract that legally opens it). Once he developed his own feelings for Max, and realized that you can, in fact, love more than one person at the same time, he chilled out a lot with the jealousy.
4. Are there any mono-poly relationships in the polycule? Aaaghh! Yes!! Drake remains mostly monogamous (he has engaged in a threesome, but he doesn’t think that counts since Riley was one of the participants; it was her idea, and she chose the other person).
5. What “shape” is the polycule? A triad, a “V”, a straight line of metamours, or incomprehensible? Listen. It’s complicated lol. Again, I went into great detail here. Basically63, Liam, Max, and Riley are a triad and they are nesting partners. But since Drake is also a nesting partner, even though he’s mono and only with Riley, I count them as a quad. Rashad is Riley’s lover and he is solo-poly with lots of other partners, so he is not a nesting partner but part of the extended polycule.
6. Where do each of the members land on the “solo poly” to “entwined” spectrum? As stated above, Rashad is solo poly. He dates very casually but is married to his job. His only deep emotional entanglement is Riley but even for her, he wouldn’t change his lifestyle. They work because she would never ask him nor want him to. After all, she has (functionally) three husbands already. Riley, Drake, Liam, and Max are about as entangled as it gets. They live together, work together, and often share a bed.
7. Where do each of the members land on the “free agent” to “community oriented” spectrum? Rashad is a free agent. Siobhan too. Riley, Max, and Liam are very community oriented. Drake is just there for Riley.
8. How did each member realize they were polyamorous? Did they always know, or was there some sort of epiphany? Max always knew…  he was poly before he met Riley. He’s the one who told her about it when she asked him what was wrong with her for having feelings for more than one person at a time. Riley figured it out quickly. Liam took a little longer, but he got there eventually. What started as a one-time threesome with Riley and Max turned out to be a potent combination of physical attraction and a lifelong friendship that ended with him falling hard and fast for Max, with Riley’s enthusiastic blessing.
9. Do any of the current members practice hierarchical polyamory? Who are the primary partners? Oh, yes. I understand that a lot of people find hierarchy unethical but if you ask Liam, he will tell you that he is Riley’s husband and furthermore, he is the king and Riley is his queen making their marriage and the ruling of Cordonia the first priority. Mostly everyone is on board with that and it works. Not always though. Riley would say she loves each of them differently but she does not love one more than another. Max is pretty submissive in personality, and since he’s in love with both Riley and Max, he would not dispute that Liam and Riley’s relationship is primary, he’s just happy to be part of it. Drake’s biggest issue in the beginning was seeing himself as NOT primary. Being monogamous, he saw her marrying Liam as her choosing Liam over him, and it took him leaving for a while to come to terms with it. He still struggles with it from time to time, but now they have open communication and are always able to work through it.
10. If the polycule is hierarchical, what differs in the boundaries set for primary vs secondary partners? Tertiary partners? Drake doesn’t have other partners. Liam does casual hookups when he travels. Riley occasionally does. Protection is a huge thing that everyone must use if they are going outside the primary quad. I haven’t explored this issue much but I have thought about writing some one-shots around this issue. Since they are pretty closed, catching feelings for someone outside the established polycule might be an issue. This question is making me think I need to explore this in some one-shots.
