one time when i was 17 i watched an episode of doctor who (tennant years) that made me so inconsolable that i went upstairs to my mom and i sobbed like, "please don't make fun of me, i'm so upset about a fake person from a tv show right now i can't stop crying." she let me sit in her lap and tell her all about the episode and i stopped crying and said i felt so stupid and she started laughing and she said, "i once cried this hard in college over a star trek episode. want to hear about it?" i said yes and then while she told me about the episode she got upset all over again 30 years later and she started crying and then i started laughing about it so hard i started crying again

I can't bring myself to condemn all U.S. soldiers. I can't do it because there is nothing in our society that prepares you to dismantle the narrative given to us about what service in armed forces really means. If you were never given the opportunity to understand what the U.S. is and how it does it's dirty work, I know that in the majority of cases this is not a willful ignorance, this is a system working as intended. The soldiers we send to foreign lands are supposed to be able to serve in two or three tours before they even have the chance to reflect on what it is they have done and are contributing to. The ways soldiers receive orders and the goals that their superiors set out for them are purposefully obfuscating the intended outcomes of their actions. They aren't even just lied to, they are told to complete impossible tasks where the effect of their work is counter to their stated goals. Because their superiors know that if they gave their soldiers all the information, all the context and the likely outcomes of carrying out their orders, they would be faced with the very real possiblity of their orders being rejected by their troops.

The fact is, its understandable that you are more open to hearing another side of the story after you served only 3-4 years, but after 30 years, I can imagine nothing more terrifying than the idea that someone else knows the truth about what you accomplished in those three decades better than you do, and they are saying it was all in service of something terrible. Of course, this is also by design.

I saw somebody react to this trying to be big brain and say "aha but you see they plan to rig all future elections"

In which case they better get on it bc they've lost like 3 special elections already, dropped their original UN ambassador nominee bc they were worried they would lose that special election, and also "tax cuts paid for by big cuts to social programs hope nobody minds" is like, the one thing republicans consistently try to do since like forever. Its not some crazy new thing they would need a 1000 year reich for, its what they do literally every time they are in government.
