Superman having unexpected emotional reactions to smells and sounds, and Batman figuring out why.
Itโs little things. They get food after a mission and Batman sees the other man tear up as they stand in a line of awe-struck civilians. Theyโre picking up the pieces after an alien invasion and hear a mother humming softly to her baby. Batman pauses when he sees Superman stare off into space, face blank and eyes welling up.
At first, Batman thinks his colleague is experiencing some sort of psychological or cognitive issues. A processing disorder, some sort of overstimulation of the senses. Then, instead of Batman observing Superman, Bruce observes Clark. It clicks immediately.
Theyโre sitting atop Gotham General Hospital on a Friday night. Itโs BatmanโBruceโs turn to bring food. He goes with falafel. Itโs what they were in line for the first time he noticed his friendโs reaction and, as expected, Clark tears up when they dig in.
โI notice you do that sometimes,โ Bruce says as he chews on a fry. โNot sure if you knew.โ
Clark sniffles and laughs awkwardly, wiping his hands with a crumpled up napkin. โOf course you noticed. Itโs you.โ
They sit in silence for a few minutes as Clark collects himself. Bruce continues eating like nothing happened. He lets Clark lead the conversation.
โItโs justโฆI donโt remember anything about Krypton.โ Clark pauses and takes a watery, shuddering breath. โNot consciously, anyway. I wouldnโt know what my birth parents looked like without the Fortress AI. And then I smell something or hear something and itโs likeโฆโ
โYour body remembers,โ Bruce fills in. โEven if you donโt think you do.โ
โYes!โ Clark is pulling at his hair in frustration. โI donโt have a clue what food was like on Krypton, but I get near falafel trucks and want to cry! Something about it smells so familiar, but I couldnโt tell you what.โ
โAnd then you hear something that sounds familiar, but you canโt quite place it.โ
If Clark knows theyโre not just talking about him anymore, he doesnโt say it.
โYeah,โ he sighs. โLike a lullaby or random sounds on the street. They sound likeโฆโ
They sit in silence again. Clark takes small bites of his food, the same way he always does when they get falafel. Bruce realizes that his friend must agonize over the strange emotions that the food elicits, but he also savors itโas though heโs not sure if or when heโll ever get to have it again, so he has to make it last and enjoy it like itโs his last meal. Like it might disappear and become another memory he canโt quite place.
โI can cook,โ Bruce says. โIโm not as helpless in the kitchen as people think. If the AI has any way to alter Kryptonian recipes with Earth ingredientsโฆIโd be happy to give them a try.โ
Clark doesnโt hide the tears as he takes another bite. A bigger one this time, like heโs not so scared the food needs to last.
