Superman having unexpected emotional reactions to smells and sounds, and Batman figuring out why.

Itโ€™s little things. They get food after a mission and Batman sees the other man tear up as they stand in a line of awe-struck civilians. Theyโ€™re picking up the pieces after an alien invasion and hear a mother humming softly to her baby. Batman pauses when he sees Superman stare off into space, face blank and eyes welling up.

At first, Batman thinks his colleague is experiencing some sort of psychological or cognitive issues. A processing disorder, some sort of overstimulation of the senses. Then, instead of Batman observing Superman, Bruce observes Clark. It clicks immediately.

Theyโ€™re sitting atop Gotham General Hospital on a Friday night. Itโ€™s Batmanโ€”Bruceโ€™s turn to bring food. He goes with falafel. Itโ€™s what they were in line for the first time he noticed his friendโ€™s reaction and, as expected, Clark tears up when they dig in.

โ€œI notice you do that sometimes,โ€ Bruce says as he chews on a fry. โ€œNot sure if you knew.โ€

Clark sniffles and laughs awkwardly, wiping his hands with a crumpled up napkin. โ€œOf course you noticed. Itโ€™s you.โ€

They sit in silence for a few minutes as Clark collects himself. Bruce continues eating like nothing happened. He lets Clark lead the conversation.

โ€œItโ€™s justโ€ฆI donโ€™t remember anything about Krypton.โ€ Clark pauses and takes a watery, shuddering breath. โ€œNot consciously, anyway. I wouldnโ€™t know what my birth parents looked like without the Fortress AI. And then I smell something or hear something and itโ€™s likeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYour body remembers,โ€ Bruce fills in. โ€œEven if you donโ€™t think you do.โ€

โ€œYes!โ€ Clark is pulling at his hair in frustration. โ€œI donโ€™t have a clue what food was like on Krypton, but I get near falafel trucks and want to cry! Something about it smells so familiar, but I couldnโ€™t tell you what.โ€

โ€œAnd then you hear something that sounds familiar, but you canโ€™t quite place it.โ€

If Clark knows theyโ€™re not just talking about him anymore, he doesnโ€™t say it.

โ€œYeah,โ€ he sighs. โ€œLike a lullaby or random sounds on the street. They sound likeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHome.โ€

They sit in silence again. Clark takes small bites of his food, the same way he always does when they get falafel. Bruce realizes that his friend must agonize over the strange emotions that the food elicits, but he also savors itโ€”as though heโ€™s not sure if or when heโ€™ll ever get to have it again, so he has to make it last and enjoy it like itโ€™s his last meal. Like it might disappear and become another memory he canโ€™t quite place.

โ€œI can cook,โ€ Bruce says. โ€œIโ€™m not as helpless in the kitchen as people think. If the AI has any way to alter Kryptonian recipes with Earth ingredientsโ€ฆIโ€™d be happy to give them a try.โ€

Clark doesnโ€™t hide the tears as he takes another bite. A bigger one this time, like heโ€™s not so scared the food needs to last.

I drew all the Life Series Winners

Originally these paintings started out as distraction from school work and I also wanted to get better at cinematic composition and gradient mapping. I never imagined that this would turn into a several months long project but here we are!

I think tumblr is the one place where itโ€™s acceptable to make a really long post just talking about the little details I hid in these pictures:

First of all everyone is looking in a very specific direction (until Joel came along but he is special let him be).

Pearl is looking at the camera, she is the only one who is aware of the viewer (you) while Cleo isnโ€™t looking at us at all because she couldnโ€™t actually โ€œseeโ€ with the VR on their head. Also Cleo is surrounded by a cemetery of her previous alliances.

Technically Scott and Martyn are are looking up and down. Martyin is sinking into the sea with the hourglass in his hands, while Scott is touching the stars.

Grian and Scar who are both looking at each other technically. I also intentionally used colorschemes that were similar to one another. Oh yeah, and two certain flowers are also presentโ€ฆI wonder what those stand for!

And well Joel is just there currently but his has to be my favourite, color, composition and storytelling wise too. I was giggling to myself while drawing and just had the best time ever and it seems like the majority of you agree that his turned out great!

Thatโ€™s all thank you for reading my yapping, I need to let this out somewhere ugshsh

galactic translation:
Scar: shh. Scar: don't worry Scar: no-one is going to do aynthing to you Grian: hi Grian: this will help you breathe Grian: but you're gonna have to let me put it on Grian: can you do that? Grian: there we go... Grian: see? Grian: it's better, right? Grian: now, our friend will come to help you more Grian: it that okay?

also, for the next chapter, do you want me to continue with the galactic, or should I just write it in english and put it in different bubble so you'd know if they're speaking galactic or english?
