FAVORITE COLOR: Purple 💜 Blues as a class are probably second and those tend to feature much more in my art....

LAST FILM: It might have been Interstellar a month or so ago? First time watching it. 8/10

LAST SHOW: I guess it was an episode of Journey to the West (1986) this weekend, but that was a one-off.... I'm very not good at watching or finishing shows! The last show I watched in full would have been Dead Boy Detectives at the end of last year, I think, and I'm still technically working through Interview with the Vampire (but it's been a good while since I've watched an episode) (this is a me issue, not because of the show)

I know it's not part of this template but I sometimes see it on these things so I'm going to also mention LAST BOOK because I'm excited that I just finished Babel by R.F. Kuang! It was very good, also the first full, physical book I've read for fun in years so 👌

SWEET/SAVORY/SPICY: Probably savory! Sweet would be second, and while I don't dislike spice, my tolerance is just not very high lol

RELATIONSHIP: Nah lmao. Too busy right now!

LAST GOOGLE SEARCH: I don't store my search history but the most recent tabs from a search that I still have open are about Appalachian ginseng! Did you know there's a native North American ginseng species and that there was a robust international export industry of ginseng out of Southern Appalachia for a while, to the point of overharvesting? I think that's neat. (The plant, not the human impact.)

GENUINELY the only character who can maybe give Jiang Cheng a run for his money in the loss department is Song Lan, who shares the Jiang Cheng experiences of “entire sect wiped out in an act of petty revenge” and “uninformed subject of nonconsensual surgery that irreparably ruptured his remaining closest relationship.” He is spared the trauma of a beloved sibling dying in his arms, but he becomes a mute fierce corpse wandering alone instead of a highly respected sect leader with a beloved nephew, so I feel like it’s a wash.

#in my brain it's jc is the one guy who can give sl a run for his money on the loss front lol#because while sl has -1 sibling dying in his arms he does have +1 best friend/soulmate/ex-lover/what have you dying by suicide#in front of him while he has to watch#which i would say puts them on relatively even footing#and from THERE jc gets to move on and raise his beloved nephew and strengthen his sect he built#while sl is further robbed of his very personhood and kept as an undead thrall for 7 years forced to do whatever his greatest enemy wants#and only after that wraps up does he get to wander the world as a mute fierce corpse#he ends up with 2 swords and some soul fragments and that's about all that's left to his name#so. still winning in the loss olympics i think very regrettably#jiang cheng#song lan#meta#mdzs#regardless let's talk more about the jc/sl parallels! i think we as a fandom should do that more

Hurt/Comfort: A-

I love some good hurt/comfort! I like reading it and writing it. Me? Full-time songxiaoist? Who would have thought

It gets the minus only because this is such a broad trope. It's not a tag I'll usually peruse in hopes of finding something, and I won't read a fic just because it has that tag. If something else about a fic catches my attention, the hurt/comfort angle is an additional plus.

Matchmaking Hijinks: D+

Honestly, this is a trope I haven't spent much time exploring, so if someone were to show me a good execution of this, I wouldn't turn it down. But also, I could interpret this a few different ways! Is it about a someone scheming to set up their friends? Eh, the meddling can feel annoying, and not something I'm drawn to. Is it the hijinks that follow after a formal matchmaking arrangement? Also not super interesting, to me -- but the next step from this? Arranged Marriage? Somehow significantly more compelling (more of a C+).

Give me a fanfiction trope and I’ll grade it:

  • A: Love it. Spend my time combing AO3 for it.
  • B: Like it. Not one of my bigger cravings, but it can scratch a certain itch if I’m in the right mood.
  • C: Neutral. A good author might be able to sell it, but a bad one will kill it deader than dead.
  • D: Not my favorite. I avoid it if I can, but it won’t necessarily put me off reading something.
  • F: Hate it. Will immediately make me nope out of a fic.

#songxiao#song lan#xiao xingchen#mdzs#yi city g4g#I LOVE THIS A LOT....#the perfect balance of tenderness and angst! the bittersweet but ultimately happy ending they deserve!#i REALLY like the posing here. both their faces in profile look very elegant#but then the way their bodies fit together like puzzle pieces and the way they're holding each other is also compositionally engaging#and so clear how close and comfortable they are (emotionally as well as physically)#they are very serious about holding on and never losing each other again and it's literally visible in how they're flush against each other#from the kiss clear down to their KNEES like these men will be taking all the physical contact possible thank you#sl's legs and xxc's torso... 👌#not to mention the hands! beautiful#proportions-wise you can also tell that these are both tall guys which i love#the kiss itself... 😭#so gentle and perfectly placed right at the middle of his throat on the scar#the sparse coloring with the pinks amid the greyscale really makes the scar (and the flowers) pop#and they're okay. they're okay!#they've gotten a second chance and they get to keep each other this time 😭#all the bad stuff happened. but somehow here they are <3#finally plum blossoms are perhaps my favorite motif for sl and they are so appropriate here for a songxiao who have persevered and made it.#fab TYSM!!
