~ Greek mythology aesthetics: Renan Corbani as Ganymede, the Cup-bearer of the Gods. A Phrygian prince, “the loveliest born of the race of mortals” by Homer’s words in the “Iliad”, he was abducted by Zeus in the shape of an eagle and carried to Mount Olympus, where he became the immortal wine-pourer of the Olympians, replacing Hebe in such office. In some myths, he is indicated as the only one of Zeus’ lovers to be graced with the gift of immortality, hence Ganymede is sometimes regarded as the God of Homosexual Love. But alas, this caused Hera’s jealousy in some stories, so in order to save him, Zeus turned Ganymede into the constellation known as Aquarius, the water-bearer.

“Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side.
The summer’s gone, and all the roses falling,
It’s you, it’s you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer’s in the meadow,
Or when the valley’s hushed and white with snow,
And I’ll be here in sunshine or in shadow,
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.” (Painting by Richard Stabbert)
