I'm trying to learn how to use ASL in a comic format but I'm having a hard time finding any videos or good references on how to do so respectfully. I don't use ASL or any kind of Sign myself- so if someone who does use ASL could help direct me on where to look to study for such things- or even let me know if this is a good place to start then that would be so awesome!!
I would like to go about this in the most respectful way possible so feedback from those in the ASL community would be greatly appreciated ^^

hi! im selectively mute and use asl daily. theres actually very few up-to-date visual dictionaries for sign, and it changes too quickly to really rely on something from the 70s (eg: counting from the 70s is very importantly different). theres also a lot of dialects so regional accuracy can be hard. the best resource ive seen so far is handspeak.com, but they miss a lot of useful words.
some advice- asl is NOT english. we use different grammar, and our words have different connotations than some english ones. theres a lot of words we just do not have, and a lot of sayings we just do not use. a literal translation can be difficult, bc some things are more gestured about than said, if that makes sense. like "i didnt even see that!"- not always THAT I SEE-NOT, but sometimes something like THAT-PAST (like saying that just went completely by me).
ALSO. WHERE YOU PUT A SIGN IS VERY IMPORTANT. this is the difference between sex and work, pink and penis, hungry and horny, etc. even if it doesnt look important, i promise you, it is.
for comic purposes, moving the fingerspelled letters makes sense. but irl, dont do that. its hard to read

mimic mumbo who’s trying really hard to be human but hes failing so hard because the only human on hermitcraft is joe hills and there’s Something Slse going on with him so hes not helping in the slightest. but that also means that no other hermits actually know how humans are supposed to act so they’re all super supportive like “yeah man that’s exactly what humans do!”
