anyway with that disclaimer out of the way
I think I've said this in the authors notes, but the whole fic was born because I somehow ?? misread Don's fear of Dale being drafted in @kjxlll 's excellent Let the Sea Roll as instead being ?? about Dale being gay??? and was so taken with that headcanon, but then when I brought it up to her as "hey you inspired me to write a fic about queer Dale" she was like How did you reach that conclusion about my fic
the other inspiration was that my friend broke up with their girlfriend and I went over to their place to keep them company, and like the terrible person I am I thought "hey this is a good setup for a fic" 💀 so that's where the first chapter came from (they're back together though so really it's fine)
uhhhhh I guess fun facts for future chapters are that Takeo, who we will meet in chapter four, is based looks-wise on my very handsome and talented friend who is very much 100% heterosexual irl whoops. He (Takeo) is second generation Japanese American, from the coast kind of near Bobby, and his dad manages a lumber mill. he's the world's most chillest nicest guy and Don absolutely hates him for No Reason Whatsoever.

the shameful secret about it is I learned after the fact that the counter gridiron party was actually held in an outdoor pavilion so my description of it as being indoors is actually incorrect. this has haunted me for months.
the title is taken from Prince Escalus' closing speech in Romeo and Juliet:

I thought it was a nice tie in to Carl's joke about Jill being like Prince Escalus, and it also fit well with her as a prosecutor choosing to keep their secret while exposing the white house's.
I've toyed with the idea of a post-watergate follow up fic with her asking them to tell her about the Sirica thing and/or the relationship, but I keep forgetting to brainstorm about it lmao

Tell me all your secrets about Light The Kindling
Ooohhhh okay well secret one is that the title was supposed to be Light the Kindling, Burn Down Rome but I mixed up the order when I posted it :x: I've grown to accept it for what it is but I still think the original flows better. Also in the initial draft Percy's name was David until I realized I could do a Perseus tie-in, and I'm realizing as I type this that I was picturing him looking like David Henrie from wizards of waverly place lmao
Uhhhh idk this fic was mostly an excuse for me to sneak in my interest in astronomy and ancient Rome by letting Percy infodump in my stead hahahaha but the olive oil WAS the first scene I brainstormed and the entire driving force behind the fic 👍

Koskela/Hietanen: ship it 100%
1. What made you ship it?
Okay well firstly Vilho Koskela is my dream man, so write that down. But just to recap:
- Hietanen blowing up a tank in a way that could have gotten him killed is the only thing that prompts Koskela not only to talk about his feelings, but to use exclamation points
- When Hietanen is wounded, Koskela tries to get into the ambulance with him and promises that if they both live they'll see each other again
- Koskela literally dreams about wandering through a field like lovers with Hietanen
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
Uhh probably the genuine respect and friendship they have for each other? They're so different but they trust and care about each other, and more importantly they UNDERSTAND each other. They're gentle with each other in the midst of so much ungentleness.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
I don't think so? I think the fandom is pretty much in agreement about these two even if people don't ship it. I guess I just wish it were more popular!

Roger has been my favorite boat boy since the first moment I saw his scowly little face and his big ears, but it was probably @borealopelta 's love for the ship that really kickstarted my own love for it! I find them very easy and fun to write, which is basically the metric for how hard I ship a pairing.
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
I love how absolutely stupid they are for each other. They're idiots and they're completely useless at getting themselves together without outside help but they're also perfect for each other and so so in love. Tooth rotting fluff kind of couple (not my usual thing tbh but I make an exception for them)
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Well historically speaking, based on who we know was close with who, Chuck/Jim and Roger/Shorty probably make more sense, but they don't compel me as much as Chuck/Roger so idgaf.

1. What made you ship it? The inciting factor is of course my intense obsession with Mustelid 1 (hereafter "the weasel") and the silver fox good looks of Mustelid 2 (hereafter "the mongoose"), but I'd say uhhhhh..... the weasel paints himself as so helpless and lost and miserable at that time, and the mongoose is very much his attack dog protector, which is a fun dynamic. I also think the weasel needs to be taken down at least 40 or 50 pegs, and the mongoose is one of the few people in his life who I think could do that.
2. What are your favorite things about the ship? I love a pathetic sopping wet man/"he asked for no pickles" partner dynamic, what can I say? But also I think it offers lots of opportunities to play around in the gaps of the canon timeline since they're spending so much time alone together and staying in hotels etc.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? Well I think I'm the only person alive who seriously ships it, but I guess an opinion that is unpopular with me, the opinion holder, is that I kind of feel bad about shipping it at all since the weasel's wife is so lovely and supportive and deserves better lmao. But I'm not going to let that get in the way of my toxic yaoi :))))
