Creature of the Night:

“Feathered Dinosaurs aren’t scary,” is false, it’s about how it is presented and nothing is more terrifying than a bitter truth.

by Jayson Duria/WobblyWorks

my absolute fav thing about mcyt is that everyone just makes their minecraft skin what fucking ever and subsequently makes their branding and character portrayals fucking hilarious, the funniest manifestation of course being when mcyts choose to have existing pop culture characters as a skin. kisuke urahara tryhards terra swoop force. kakashi is fucking around with redstone. there are two people dressed as captain america, one is some fuckass reindeer and another is dead in a flower field

Also gotta love how common it is for their skin, name, and personality to have no correlation. Just an absolute scattershot approach to (accidentally?) creating a character.

I am something of a connoisseur of dead fandoms. I don't have the patience for living ones-- my interest tends to fizzle out when it's fed a normal release schedule. So instead, I binge completed works, then binge their most popular 100 or so fanworks, think of nothing else for a month while practically vibrating with unspoken opinions, and then move on. I've picked over many a corpse this way, broken into many a dwindling house party to steal the forgotten hors d'oeuvres then bounce before anyone could catch me in a long-entrenched argument that I only half understand. This is my default way of consuming media.

So trust me when I say that picking up dsmp in 2023 is bizarre.

This is less like wandering through a failed shopping mall, and more like playing Eldritch Horror. There are so many signs of past conflict; so many scattered bits of discourse that I'm trying not to look too closely at for fear of releasing something I cannot comprehend. Everyone uses a special nomenclature to differentiate the characters from their players, and they stick to it like a goddamn lifeline. Any tumblr mentioning the fandom in their bio also immediately follows that with a declaration as either an anti or an apologist for the guy who runs the server. A given creator could be voiceless, faceless, in Antarctica, or on tumblr standing behind you right now. Every bit of lighthearted fanart is paired with an oblique spoiler hinting that every single character and the land they walk on is doomed.

And then there is the very literal reverence for the dead. It's clear that for so many who followed the server in real time, Techno's death is a heavy weight to bear. At least for this latecomer, the legend of Technoblade can't be overstated. Knowing from the start that he wouldn't be there to see the end of this story has not lessened his impact within it. On the one hand, it's not terribly different from experiencing most of the classics-- I don't mourn for Jonathan Swift when I read A Modest Proposal. But on the other hand I know that I'm walking on an open wound. Perhaps it's best that I leave the topic at that.

Who's to say if this fandom will launch back into full force when the second season kicks off. I should probably be sure I'm outside the blast radius before that happens. But for now I'm grabbing all the potatoes I can carry and eyeing the plate of muffins cause man, there's a lotta delicious shit here.

Ok actually genuine tip for new tumblr users: if you see a post you like and want to reblog but theres a bad/annoying added on bit in the reblog chain feel free to just reblog that post straight from op or the last person who knew how to mind their business

Or just mock the edition. That usually works

Being overstimulated is such a weird thing to explain to people. Like "hey sorry, I'm not mad at you and this is nobody's fault and I'm not blaming anyone for it happening, I am aware this is a part of regular everyday life but I am mentally crumbling because There Have Been Things Happening nonstop for 5 hours straight back to back with no breaks, and I really need to sit down in complete silence for like 15-25 minutes, after which I will be completely fine and can proceed as normal. But if I'm not allowed to have that, I will resort to violence."

Evil biology facts that fill me with Fear :)

hey, I heard y’all like evil biology facts like knowledge about horse blood types.

well! today I was researching alternative biochemistries extraterrestrial life could use and. man. I think Earth life is fucked up enough for me thanks

  • biological dark matter. WHAT DO YOU MEAN MY BLOOD HAS DNA IN IT FROM NO KNOWN SOURCE. YOU CAN’T JUST SAY THAT COME BACK HERE
  • One specific cave that has been sealed for 5.5 million years and has developed an ecosystem completely dependent on chemosynthetic bacteria.
  • Was anybody going to tell me that bacteria have decided iron is yummy and are eating the Titanic, or was I supposed to just read that myself
  • Terrible Berry (yes, that’s what the genus name means). This whole thing is so fucked up. These scientists were testing whether radiation could be used to kill pathogens in food, so they dosed a tin of meat with enough radiation to kill any known living organism (as one does) but guess what, it still fucking spoiled because of THIS BASTARD FUCKER.
  • (seriously, why is it like this? WHY has a bacterium evolved to chill in radioactive waste like it’s a soothing Jacuzzi tub? What does it know that we don’t know?)
  • (ANSWERS. I WANT ANSWERS, YOU CHERNOBYL ASS BITCH.)
  • Cursed worm, which has no mouth or digestive system and depends entirely on five (5) different species of bacteria, which consume hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen monoxide, and carbon monoxide, for food. How do you, a worm, even...figure out how to do...all that?
  • Bone worms. At least they like their bones already dead. I still could have gone without knowing this was a thing.
  • “Oh, parasitic plant, that sounds c—WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING”
  • I am like half convinced this is made up. Seriously, bacteria grow their own electrical wires and we just let them?

To clarify

Evil (affectionate and admiring)

They took the unkillable bacterium and put a Disney song inside of it.

“In 2003, U.S. scientists demonstrated D. radiodurans could be used as a means of information storage that might survive a nuclear catastrophe. They translated the song "It's a Small World" into a series of DNA segments 150 base pairs long, inserted these into the bacteria, and were able to retrieve them without errors 100 bacterial generations later.”

gentle reminder: please make sure you’re regularly cleaning your water bottles, thermos, and kettles with antibacterial soap and warm water so you don’t get ill. this includes the inside of the container itself, the straw, lid, the outside and bottom of the container, as well as any crevices. rinse well. stay safe and hydrated, babes. 🪴💧

PSA to New Tumblr Users

DON'T CENSOR YOUR TAGS. DON'T.

Write out 'Suicide' Write out 'Rape' Write out 'Abuse' & 'Assault' & 'Gore'

If you don't use the real words in your tags? People won't be able to filter those out and stay SAFE.

You need to tag properly to keep everyone safe.

Don't water down warnings just because social media has trained you to water them down.

Seriously guys. I know a lot of y’all newbies (welcome, by the way!) are coming from places where you get in trouble for just typing those words out.

But here, our tagging and filtering DEPENDS on y’all using the actual words. You’re not going to get in trouble for saying them. Using the full and proper word is what will allow you, and your fellows, to curate your experience well.

Once again, Tumblr manages to succeed via just being honest with their users.

I made a post back around April fool's about the crabs being so popular because the joke was that every other website tries to trick you into clicking things so they can make money from your clicks and what if instead a website just asked "please click this revenue generating crab. It is there to generate revenue. In return you will have clicked on a crab. Nothing more." And the answer to that question was "people will frantically click on that crab. They don't hate the idea of the website getting money, they hate the idea of being profited on against their will".

So Tumblr implemented actual revenue crabs. "For this much money you can fill your or someone else's dash with virtual crabs. This will have the effect of there being crabs on their screen."

And people will buy those crabs. Because yes you're spending money on something stupid and useless but it's being sold to you as "hey you want something stupid and useless?", which is a nice change of pace from every other site trying to make itself out to be something more than what it is.

Twitter is floundering with the checkmark system because it's being sold as "confirm that you are someone important and who you say you are is true", which it isn't at all right now because anyone can buy one. You're buying a useless checkmark that only says that YOU think you're important. Or, more often than not right now, you are intending to trick other people into thinking you're someone you're not.

Meanwhile, Tumblr just said "Consider this double check mark. It does nothing. You will be marking yourself as someone who paid money for a meaningless checkmark and sometimes it will randomly turn into a bunch of crabs, making the site harder to use". And the userbase is like "Well sure, that sounds delightful."

The point is, despite what all the marketing and advertising people have tried to say, painting trash gold and trying to pass it off as something better is almost never as effective as just saying "hey you want this trash?"

Why yes, in fact, I do.
