Maybe it's just me as a Filipino who has lived through a murderous dictatorship and oligarchies in a queerphobic country controlled by the rich who brutalize grassroots pro worker movements all under the military abuse of US imperialism but...

You just gotta keep showing up. Support each other. Don't just fight for yourself. The work is hard, but you just gotta keep doing it. You'll always see results, even if they're not always the ones you want, or as big as you want them to be.

All your work always matters. Even if it doesn't feel like it at first. It always matters.

12 years of murderous and plunderous dictators but fuck it we ball

I forgot to update this when it happened but Duterte was arrested by the ICC because people, especially women in the Philippines, never stopped working to bring him to justice. Dr. Raquel Fortun examined the bodies of drug war victims and the evidence she found is being used in the case. Photographers like Raffy Lerma and Ezra Acayan took photos of the many killings by police.

People like Jude Sabio, Antonio Trillanes, members of the Magdalo partylist, and Leila de Lima, submitted the case to the ICC, then activists and family members of the victims led by the National Union of People's Lawyers also submitted documents to the ICC.

People like Patricia Evangelista and Maria Ressa continued to bring his crimes to light internationally.

All this, alongside the continuous work of activists, is what helped us get to this point. Sara Duterte in impeachment proceedings because of her corruption as Vice President. Rodrigo Duterte in the ICC awaiting trial. After 7 years, because they never stopped working towards justice.

The work always matters.

god i never told you guys but a couple weeks ago at work i heard a guy say, and i closely paraphrase, "So I was out with my partner--republicans hate it when i say that. My heterosexual partner Jessica--" and i was straight up crying before he finished his sentence. fully diegetic convergent linguistic evolution live in the workplace

"thats her name heteroooo jessica thats her name folks thats what we call her hertero jessica"

this is a fan translators appreciation post!!

they are really doing the Work for nothing but the love of the story. paid not a penny, trying not to get caught, often dealing with niche genre or cultural nuance that they still manage to convey so cleverly. the time, energy, and dedication that goes into that. all so people can experience a story they enjoyed. oughhhh owe them my life. so many stories I'd never get to experience if not for fan translations!!

and you know what, they may not be the author, but you can still see their heart and soul in their translations. the care they put into crafting footnotes and linking art and providing updates.

to all fan translators around the world, even if you didn't finish translating the work: THANK YOU 🥹💚

Some people have an unhealthy parasocial relationship with the moon. The truth is just because you see the moon every day doesn't mean you are friends with the moon or even that you particularly know her

god cis people really dont even know about transgender euphoria. like they can only fathom transitioning as something you do to save your life. its so so bleak

AND THEY STILL GET MAD!!!!!

So many Americans online don’t realize: We in Southeast Asia interact with working-class Americans far more than the rich ones. Why? Because our region is where poorer Americans actually come to work low-wage resort jobs, teach English, or retire on Social Security checks that don’t stretch at home. The ‘ugly American’ tourists? The military guys? The sexpats? Not exactly the 1% yacht crowd. But keep pretending your working class has no global footprint.

This is the thing about people claiming they don’t have the upper hand over the third world by sheer virtue of living in a first world country. at the most basic level your money is quite literally worth more than anyone in the third world. There’s a huge group of people whose entire “business model” or “retirement plan” is just moving to another country and utilizing the exchange rate in a way that at best makes them go from lower class to a high bracket and in worse cases has them start utilizing slave labor and exploiting locals for their benefit, which is easy for a westerner to do regardless of background

it's funny because my job involves a lot of using a box cutter, so you'd think that's the thing I'd accidentally hurt myself with the most

but nooo no no no. the box cutter is my colleague, my ally, my friend. you know what is truly bloodthirsty in a print & signage shop? literally Anything Else that's able to cut but not supposed to. cardboard, sheets of plastic, the humble paper of course, corrugated polypropylene, aluminum composite sheets - i nicked myself on a sheet of magnetic material today?? it bled. kinda profusely.

basically:

  • box cutter: a trusty companion, might hurt you if you handle it wrong, but that's understandable
  • stuff you use the box cutter on: they know you as their enemy. they know the rules of this life: kill, or be killed. they know what they have to do.

thank you. the people need to know about the real menace
