“This, here. How do I say that Zuko?”

A time where Katara takes advantage of knowing a royaly educated I-can-speak-dead-languages prince to a little trip to the North Pole to dive into old, frozen, forgotten manuscripts of the old, frozen and forgotten side of the Royal Water Tribe Library.

Aka, Katara is trying to speak words and Zuko can only speak with actions.

For @zutaraweek day 2: Speak

Don't know if you're still doing the Zutara kiss au art, but if you are. Could we get a picture of post Makeout Zuko with his robes ruffled and his collar bone exposed, showing off all of the kiss and bite marks that Katara left. And no, she wasn't marking her territory, even if those court skanks were getting a little touchie today, that's not what she was doing, no matter what Suki, Ty Lee, or Toph say.

This is what they call "diplomacy."

A Comic About How Zuko Got His First Gray Hair (alternatively A Comic in which Aang Yeets a Baby)

This was spawned out of witnessing a humorous exchange between @cablesscutie and @gemgirl28 in which they discussed some steambaby headcanons and how Zuko would probably be over-protective and cautious with the first baby at least. Then Cablesscutie said, “Aang has never had one fear and gets that first steambaby for the first time and Uncle Aang just yeets that child so high and that is the story of how Zuko got his first gray hair” and I was like…. MUST. DRAW. So yes, I did shoehorn my own first Zutara child in there, but really this idea works with any zk baby if you ask me haha I didn’t draw the instance of the gray hair (that has to grow in) but this is certainly the precipitating incident. Were it not for this quote, I myself would probably not use the phrase “yeet” as I am far too elderly, but it was so perfect in this context, so it stayed. The power of Aang: what are his flings into the air but yeets. u.u

You know that point at which you notice a mistake in your drawings, but it’s far too late to change anything… yeah. ANYWAY. I haven’t read any of the Avatar comics, but I’ve seen bits and pieces of Imbalance, and I really like the style, so I took a stab at emulating it. Unfortunately I suck at reverse engineering coloring/painting styles (and get impatient and give up), so alas… is what it is. Comics are hard, coloring is harder… I can’t tell you how long it took me to sort out Katara’s colors… I ultimately decided she doesn’t need to wear red to be a leader of the Fire Nation… I love the Water Tribe aesthetic too much to let it go (I’m sure as Fire Lady, or whatever title she’d be, she’d bring light furs and blues very much into vogue in the Fire Nation).

So Thank you again to cablesscutie and gemgirl28 for their galaxy brain headcanons and for letting me draw it. Also thanks to @neincraff and @kashicanhaz for some help with some of the dialog n.n (Check out all their stuff if you’re looking for great Zutara fanfiction!)

Please do not repost, thanks!

zuko included katara's starting monologue in the fire nation schools (found on twitter)

New headcanon unlocked, Katara helped Zuko with the history books of the 100 hundred year war.

Katara is canonically fantastic with her words and an amazing story teller which is a huge part of her culture she be the perfect person to help with the narrations of history books.

Warm Weather Clothing in the Water Tribes

Broke: Katara and Sokka wear fabric clothing outside the tundra.

Woke: Katara and Sokka wear fish leather outside the tundra.

Pictured above: Nanai clothing set, Oroch robe & hat, Ainu robe (attush), another Nanai robe, and different shades of dyed fish leather

Fish leather is a popular clothing material across many arctic and subarctic cultures. Cultures that utilize fish leather include Ainu, various Siberian ethnic groups along the Amur River, and Alaska Native groups such as Inupiat & Yupik. It's labor-intensive to produce but the end product is lightweight, waterproof, and stylish.

How Does the Water Tribe Dye Their Clothing?

There are a few "realistic" ways for the Water Tribe to have acquired the blue coloring for their clothing:

Trade with Kyoshi Island

I headcanon that the Water Tribes originally imported indigo dye from Kyoshi Island, prior to the war (for the North) and the raids (for the South). Kyoshi Island is partially inspired by Japan, which is famous for its high-quality blue indigo.

Crowberry and Arctic Blueberry Dye

Both of these berries are native to the arctic. On their own, both berries produce purple dyes. However, if you mix these dyes with iron/rust-infused water or vinegar, they can become beautiful shades of blue.

Woad Dye

Woad is a plant that grows in subarctic climates like Southeastern Sibera. In the ATLAverse, they would probably grow using greenhouses in the NWT. Traditionally, the blue dye was created by fermenting woad leaves in a mixture of water and stale urine.

Or, alternatively, you could just ascribe their abundance of blue dye to a fictional animal or plant. My headcanon is that they dye their clothing blue using a poisonous-when-eaten plant to ward off large animals. It also has the added benefit allowing them to blend in with the sky when they stand along the horizon; this would be advantageous when hunting.

Hi I want to say I really appreciate you and your research. I have a character I'm trying to name. She's SWT and I was wondering if you could find some Inuit or Yupik names that mean Bird in any sense. I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

There's actually a Greenlandic Inuit YouTuber who talked about the names she gave her children and the punchline is great:

I have a post that links to online Arctic dictionaries here:

Here's a list of words that mean bird in various Inuit/Yupik languages, that I think would work well as names:

  • Tingmiak or Timmiak (Various Inuktitut dialects)
  • Tingmiluk (North Slip Inupuiat)
  • Tingmiaq or Tingmiagruk (Northwestern Inupiat)
  • Tingmiurak (Kobuk Inupiat & King Island Inupiat)
  • Tengmiak (Alaskan Yupik)
  • Qawaak (Siberian Yupik)
  • Piyagaq (Alaskan Yupik) - for baby birds
  • Piaraq (Inuinnaqtun Inuktitut) - for baby birds
