I just started reading midnight ocean and yk that thing you can do as a writer when you read stuff and you feel your neurons activate and your writing skills level up?? ME RN. I saw someone ask what "I hope this hurts" means beyond the obvious, and I started to respond only for it to turn into an essay... Because I don't feel like dumping something so long in some unsuspecting person's notifs, I'm just going to post it here instead.

I started writing this after playing the game, but ended up watching a playthrough because I couldn't remember exactly where "I hope this hurts" was repeated. I think I caught the only few times it was mentioned, but I wouldn't be surprised if I missed something, so feel free to correct me on that or anything else I might have gotten wrong.

On Twitter, I saw some discussion about Jimmy that got me thinking about the pattern of fans rejecting the use of his name.

I'm going to use it here simply for the sake of clarity, but my use of it and my commentary is in no way a criticism of said pattern, to be clear. I simply find it interesting, so below are my thoughts on how it relates to the story.

Is there a good website, doc, or something along those lines that compiles all of the brands to boycott for Palestine and/or other serious causes (ie. racist companies) as far as perfume goes? I was sent this tiktok which was very helpful, but I want to learn and do more.

I slept five hours last night, which is brutal for the chronic fatigue, but I went out with my MiL, smelled perfumes, looked at cute clothes, ate a salad... finally had the energy to play the Hades 2 update. I feel a little more like a human being lol.

I just went back and edited this a little in hopes of making it more readable. I ended up adding another section as well, because I just can't stop thinking about this.

Tbch I've seen some takes various places that make me wince. It feels like people are not examining Jimmy's perception of the people around him and instead falling into the trap of his unreliable narration. Especially in reference to Anya.

For example, people reiterating that a nurse shouldn't be upset by the sight of blood. I've been somewhat confused by this point. I thought it was pretty clear she's nauseous because she's pregnant. Not to mention, I might be forgetting, but I don't think blood was what she expressed discomfort with? It was Curly's sounds of pain, right? If blood is specifically mentioned, please let me know because I feel like I must have missed it, it's brought up so much.

Back to my point, though: If she's under- or untrained that's thanks to the company. She wanted to go to med school. Jimmy even says so, though he frames it as if she couldn't get in due to some fault of her own when it's clear it's due to her financial position and the company not giving a fuck about its workers.
