you can spot a bbc fan when they call him “john” and not “watson”
the queerbait in bbc sherlock was absolutely crazy. from s1e1.
queerbait so good i didn't buy into the irene x shelock bit (altho "i am sherlocked" was iconic) at first. i still dont buy into it tbh, but i had to think critically for a hot sec. but also, "people die all the time" and then when john is in danger he's panicking. irene being like "dr. watson youre jealous" and it's just fucking true. sally being like "john you're normal get a hobby" but mycroft being like "youre a freak like my little brother, arent you?"
also, "i'm not gay" "well i am" PLEASE!! it would've been so funny having irene pop up as john's sister's new girlfriend. john running into the woman who was flirting with his man and she's dating his sister would be so funny he'd pop two blood vessels.
it's been a while; here's some fic recs to make up for it!!!
Permanent Fixture - by vitruvianwatson (keepyoureyesfixedonme) Sherlock is a great father, and it makes John realize that domesticity can be fulfilling if you're doing it with the right people.
A Decent Proposal - by englandwouldfalljohn John wants to get re-married, to Sherlock obviously. Sherlock stares at the wall for a very long time when he finds out. They're so silly. Like the best man scene but John is asking him to be his husband.
The Dilemma of the Watson Bedroom - by jemariel Sherlock loves Rosie but hates her name. Conveniently it brings up bad memories for John as well. Some miscommunication, followed by good parenting and love confessions.
Outside Definition - by Itsallfine not parentlock, small bits throughout the series. this one's very short, but sweet. John stands up for Sherlock because he loves him, obviously.
Will be back with more soon, these are just a few I read recently!!! Permanent Fixture was a great short series option and covers all the bases!
I know I'm probably an idiot for just noticing this, but like Irene is married. idk that's kinda cool. I love lesbians. that's all.
Also in The Final Problem, John suggests the coffin is for Irene and Sherlock responds, “unmarried, sensible about death” as if both those facts would make it impossible to be Irene. This is mostly for people trying to dispute the ring. HAH TAKE THAT LET THE LESBIANS BE LESBIANS !!!!!!!!
“my ship kissed!” “my ship held hands!!!” okay. well. my ship had holes in it and was doomed to sink from the very moment of its departure. my ship flipped and drowned all the passengers. my ship had a sail that only faced windward. my ship’s home had always been at the bottom of the ocean floor. my ship is stained with barnacles and prone to heavy winds. my ship’s dock isnt waiting for it to return. And they still didnt fuck even once
why is it always "I love you" and never "Sherlock is actually a girl's name" "Why is she like this" "You keep me right" "You look sad when you think he can't see you" "people will talk" "I'd be lost without my blogger" "because you're an idiot" "you were the best man and the most human human being" "i don't have friends, I've just got one" "yes, of course i forgive you"
"i prefer my doctors clean shaven"
Mediated and Medicated
Was Sherlock high on the tarmac? They raise it as a possibility. My initial impulse is to say he wasn’t, because he didn’t seem high, but then he didn’t seem especially high when John accidentally rescued him in His Last Vow either, so I suspect I’m no judge of that. Perhaps he was. Let’s say he was.
Would that change how we see Sherlock and John’s goodbye on the tarmac? In a way, I think it could. Not to make it mean less. Perhaps to make it mean more.
It reminded me of what the creators of House did in a similar situation. When House’s girlfriend is having surgery to determine whether or not she has metastasized kidney cancer, House stays away. It’s so emotionally fraught for him that he can’t get anywhere near her. He sends other people to be supportive for him. Then, right at the last moment, he steps up. He’s by her side, he’s kind, he’s funny, he’s unafraid, and it’s great. But then we find out he only managed to do it because after a long spell of sobriety, he was high.
Sherlock had a hard time with a fake farewell to John when he was standing on the roof at Barts, and at that time he was at least fairly certain he would survive. He had plans. He intended to come back. But this time he knows the goodbye is permanent. And it seems he was at least considering making a dramatic admission to John about his feelings. It’s a very fraught moment that ends up sort of going nowhere. It’s all very stiff upper lip. He doesn’t cry all over John, and doesn’t cling to him, and doesn’t break down and tell him how scared he is. He doesn’t fight. He lies about his future so John can imagine him off having adventures for years to come. He keeps it together, he gives John a dashing and charming figure to remember. Maybe he couldn’t manage to do any of that without being high.
I wouldn’t blame him for that.
it's kinda crazy how we'll all just live in tarmac hell forever, knowing he meant to say "i love you" and somehow they're still trying to gaslight us into thinking he wasn't.
More Johnlock Fic Recs!
Can I go where you go? Can we always be this close? - by folklorian28 How I imagine they'd move back in together if Mary and Rosie didn't exist. A little angsty but super fun!
Tapestry - by stopthat Harry and Clara are getting remarried and of course, that means double the meddling big gay sister powers are happening. The parentlock fluff is the cutest, the series callbacks are perfect, and our two flatmates have a lot to figure out.
The Burning of the Leaves - by blueink3 Was not expecting to like this one as much as I did, so don't let Major Sholto throw you off. John brings Rosie and Sherlock to visit Sholto at his house and secrets are revealed. Aka Sholto is a great wingman for both of them.
Still here - by solrosan Short and sweet, like excruciatingly sweet. The Season 4 Rosie content we deserved. After the events of the Final Problem, John and Sherlock go home to Rosie and stay there.
Maybe We Could Change His Mind - by thalialunacy All our favorite Sherlock lesbians coming together to stop the stupidity and pining. Featuring Sherlock and Irene being extremely protective and super gay. Plus Harry Watson helping John get over his internalized homophobia.
You're Not Designed to be Alone - thalialunacy - from raising a child together, to getting together, to getting married. this fic pretty much covers it all in short snapshot-like chapters. Plus the Holmeses are on a mission to completely embarrass John and Sherlock, and Harry finds out she has a niece.
