UUUUUGGGGHHHH I am trying to make my own slopers, but struggling so much.. I am on my 11th bodice draft, 5th skirt draft (3rd sleeve, but not attached yet), and I CANNOT figure out how to fit this thing.
A tutorial!
I've just published a step-by-step tutorial showing how I make my beaded forms. It's 18 pages of juicy instructions, hints and tips and closeup photos AND over half an hour of video that demonstrates my beading process.
It's AUD$8 (about USD$5) and on my webshop here: https://www.pardalotemakes.com/shop/patterns
Throwback to last Christmas when I hosted a tea party for my partner's family! I was so proud of how this turned out. I really tried to pick flavors that embody the winter season, so a lot of pumpkin, apples, oranges, almonds, dates, raisins, baking spices, etc.
Thank you so much! Definitely a labor of love. I wrote out a whole schedule for myself to prep and then make sure everything was still warm by the time we all sat down (after a quick photo session of course :P) For something big like this, I find it a lot better to do most of the work in the days preceding, and then just pop things in the oven day-of where possible. You mentioned wanting to make some of these things, so I thought I'd mention that many of these recipes came from Clair Saffitz's cookbooks! I won't post them for copyright reasons, but she puts a lot of them up on YouTube, so thought I'd share the ones I could find:
Creamy Greens Pie:
Blood Orange Pudding Cake:
Vanilla Pumpkin Creme Brulee:
I also used a couple recipes (scones, orange curd, curry turkey sandwiches) from my Afternoon Tea book. The recipes in here are pretty hit-or-miss, but they are definitely quick to make, and look pretty cute!
I actually became vegetarian about 6 months ago, though, so a lot of the savory recipes in this cookbook are no longer an option 🙅♀️ My hope is to find a new afternoon tea book with more veggie options. Open to recs!
If you end up making any of these, I'd love to hear about it!
Hiya, sorry for clogging up your notifs a bit there, but I just found your blog and I love it!! So many wonderful things and so much to learn! I eagerly await anything you do in future, keep making awesome stuff and thank you so much for posting it <3
🥺🥺🥺 Thank you so much!!! I loved all of your comments immensely. I hope to post again soon about my pattern drafting journey, so hopefully you'll also find something useful in that (there are so many other tutorials and such on the process, but I figure it might be a bit different coming from a complete nööb).
Back panels done, and roughly pinned in place to see how it lays! I was too optimistic with thinking that my 100 squares would be enough for both the front and back 😭 I only have 15 squares (plus one star) left over. Definitely not enough to fill the whole front panel. My guess is I need 50 more for everything including the shoulder strap and sleeve. I'm running out of fabric, plus I need to make 3 more stars for the front! So much left to do!
Any updates on this, OP?
It looks so good!
Oh wow, thanks so much for asking!! ❤ Nice to have someone be curious about my beast of a project. I have paused working on this for a bit, but I can show you where I left off!
Basically I need enough squares to fill up the skirt panel (pic on the right), plus one sleeve and one shoulder strap. I currently have 39 squares, and I estimate I need another 30? At that point, I'll piece them all together like I did with the back of the dress.
I'm not sure if you've seen any of my other posts, but my vision for this dress is actually to have one "night" side and a "day" side! (Excuse my mediocre drawing)
I do not yet have a plan for how the "day" side will all get layed out. My initial thought is to just sew up the mockup again, draw on where the sun and rays will generally fall, true up the lines, and then cut those to use as pattern pieces? I'm not exactly sure.
My biggest hurdle will definitely be actually quilting the damn thing. I haven't decided whether or not I want to try my hand at free motion quilting, or just send it to someone with a longarm. I'm not even sure if you can mount it onto a longarm since it's not a standard rectangle? These are questions that have caused a certain amount of trepidation when thinking about picking it back up again. BUT! I definitely do intend to finish it.
My new goal atm is to teach myself how to pattern draft, as I was inspired to learn by The Closet Historian (on YouTube)! My partner even got me a second hand projector that I've set up so I can cast digital patterns onto my fabric ❤. I'm trying to use Inkscape and Seamly2D to create digital slopers, and am close to finishing the bodice block. I set a goal for myself to have a mostly me-made wardrobe, and so I'm not allowed to buy any new clothes...which was a good idea until I started to outgrow all my old stuff 😅 I'm down to two pairs of non-stretch pants and some old t-shirts and sweaters. Hence why I'm focusing on creating patterns for some new stuff to wear!
Sorry to ramble about things you didn't ask about, but I will update if I make any more progress on Queen Mattress! 👸🛏 I imagine I'll make more squares here and there between other projects 😋
I made two cute Pencil Bags (that's just the name--it's not actually meant for carrying pencils exclusively, although I guess there's nothing stopping you from using it that way :P) designed by Jin Hee Kim (www.byhandsusa.com). I bought the pattern and the fabrics from their stall at a sewing convention, and it was very fun and simple to make. They were given as Xmas gifts 🎁
It’s St. Stephen’s Day — aka Wren Day, on of my favorite of the 12 days!!! Tag me in your favorite wren posts to assist me in my wren hunt, friends!!!!
An Egyptian rock crystal of a chonky hinpopotamus amulet
(Middle Kingdom, ca. 2050-1650 BCE)
Amulets were worn by ancient Egyptians for their protective and regenative properties. Used in both in daily life and during funerary rites, amulets represented animals, deities, symbols or objects thought to possess the magical powers of warding off evil spirits.
As animals were popular representations, the hippopotamus was known for its apotropaic (e.g. ability to avert bad luck) qualities and was associated with rebirth.
It sounds like the dream prescription for avid crafters but, happily, this is a genuine recommendation from leading craft psychologist, Dr Anne Kirketerp. She recommends having lots of projects in progress at any one time because mental capacity fluctuates. We all need different levels of challenge to become engrossed in craft depending on the time of the day and day of the week.
Every crafter I know:
I'm certain this is on Tumblr somewhere, but I haven't seen it around, so I'm sharing it myself
I have decided that I want to start giving things I make as raffle prizes as a way to raise money for a good cause. I've heard of quilters doing this, but I'm unsure of what organizations exist for other crafts. If anyone has any suggestions I am all ears! I will also be doing my own research, so I will post back here if I find something :)
i just wanted to let you know that following your blog a little over a month ago inspired me to pick up sewing again, after many years of haitus––i've been having such a blast making silly little garments and costumes these past weeks, and I wanted to thank you for making that happen!
YOU ARE TOO KIND 💖 Wow—literally made me cry happy tears 🥲 Thank you for letting me know that my making silly little costumes has inspired you to do the same. If you ever want to share a fun creation, PLEASE I would like to see it 👀
a fun creation as promised! my friend and I went to the When We Were Young music festival this past weekend, so I recreated two of the jackets from MCR's The Black Parade (but short sleeved because...desert heat). thrifted black button ups + bias binding + ribbon applique + buttons. and I get a bonus wear out of it as a halloween costume :)
Ooooo they are both so GOOD! The binding and applique are immaculate 👌👌👌 Very professional looking. I love the cropped/short sleeve version! And besides Halloween, it's also something you could totally just wear as part of your everyday wardrobe. What a fun coincidence that I also saw Rachel Maksy post the same costume on insta too (don't know if you watch her videos on YT, but I like her stuff). Hope y'all had a fun time at the festival!
