Red & Green
Color holds enormous weight in the literary and theater and art world. The meaning of colors changes in context from culture to culture and from artwork to artwork. Color is universal.
Color is important to us neurologically. Apologizes to my peeps with color vision deficiency, red and green are the worst.
In Killing Eve context the colors have been a call back to literary and mythology works. These colors and tales find each other complimentary as the colors red and green are themselves.
Orpheus and Eurydice commonly were depicted in red and green during the renaissance era. And this tale as such ends with Orpheus losing again his Eurydice as Villanelle lost her Eve In season 2 the first time but counter acts this in season 3 when Villanelle doesn’t lose her a second time.
“Et tu, Brute?” Such as Brutus and Julius Caesar the latter wears green and Julius red in live theater productions. And this tale ends in simultaneous betrayal. Julius failing to rule in justness and instead in greed, forcing Brutus to commit his own betrayal to Julius. Reflects Eve forced to reject Villanelle after Villanelles own betrayal of Eve by manipulating and forcing Eves hand.
Then the minute reference of Adam and Eve. Depictions of this myth always centers the colors of red and green. As for the snake always in green curling around a red apple. Eve cast away from her pale ignorant normalcy, Villanelle own precious fantasy of belonging murdered in front of her through Eves rejection. Both of them finding their own belonging outside a society which casts away anything In nonconformity.
Recently within the 3rd season red and green has been used outside the context of Villaneve. And used to represent strife between Carolyn and her daughter Geraldine. The latter in red and the former in green, both having emotionally betrayed and disappointed each other in some way. For the first time in the season finale of season 3 we see a character wear red and green together. It’s unknown the implication of Carolyn wearing these two colors, it could be a signal of a sort of self betrayal. but of course we don’t know for certain.
Red in Killing Eve is not a color taken lightly, and rarely makes an appearance on the show. But green is a very different story, green is a color of vulnerability and emotion in KE. Also as a protection, take for instance Eves ever present coat and Villanelle wears this color whenever she feels most fragile or vulnerable. Red is a mysterious color on the show, it’s meaning flip flops and maybe we’ll see more of this hue in the coming season. But we know for certain that whenever we see red in Killing Eve that person in some context holds the power.
