melvik yuri but viktor looks exactly the same because he’s a transmasc butch
Why don't we talk about how Melvika is extremely overrated for a ship that makes no sense and ruins the characters
I mean, I usually love crackships, they're often interesting and can reveal the characters from new sides and make an unusual dynamic
Even in Arcane there are some good or not bad crackships that I treat fine, but Melvika? Seems like the only reason why it exists is bc the fandom likes headcanoning them wlw and bc it's a "masculine"/"feminine" dynamic which for some reason is often a must have in any wlw ship
But the problem is that Sevika absolutely despises pilties, esp from the council and would never tolerate Mel, it just goes against all her views and arc. While also the fans love turning Sevika into some dog/slave/servant for Mel that stays on her side and goes against Zaun. Should I even explain how classisit and disgusting it is? And how much it mischaracterises and downplays Sevika who would never be like this for a piltie? Even while working for Silco she afforded herself being openly rude to him and was completely honest that she would betray him if there's someone better for Zaun, cuz she did it for her own views, not for Silco. Also in most of the content Mel is some manipulative madame who uses Sevika as either some lady-in-waiting or a personal knight, which makes no sense for Sevika either.
.It's even worse with Sembessa cuz besides all that Ambessa also caused so much problems to the undercity and used its discrimination against it btw, but at least it's not as popular
While Mel, who grew up with a cold mother who appreciated violence and was against peaceful ways of resolving the conflicts, would have no reasons to fond for someone who's for radical methods of fight who would never cooperate or compromise with those from the opposite side. Considering with what Mel loved in Jayce: his softness, aspiration of the innovations, faith in the best for everyone and some naiveness about it. Their frankness, sort of valnurability, tenderness, emotionality and sensuality were a huge part of the relationship that made Mel feel loved and cared about. Obviously, we didn't see how Sevika act in relationship, but she didn't show any of it, even when she had a lot of emotions inside, we haven't seen her showing any emotion besides anger so there are no reasons to think she would be open enough for Mel, since she never was with anyone else it's out of character for her, which is why I don't think their relationship could work out or even start in the first place
I'm free for other opinions tho and would glad to hear what other people think about them
I think most of the argument about Sevika despising Pilties to the point a crack ship (that all fans of it recognize as extremely unlikely in canon) falls apart when we consider that a) season 2 of arcane abandons any meaningful conversation about classism in both characters and plot b) at the end of arcane, Sevika joins the Piltover council.
It’s also very reductive and racially charged to claim that fans turn Sevika into a “dog/slave/servant for Mel” considering the sheer number of fans of this ship that are black (women) themselves or the fact that Mel is a black female character and Sevika is another dark skinned person of color. Discussing how fandom at large can mistreat characters (especially dark skin women of color) that do not conform to the western frame of femininity is a valid conversation, but unless you yourself are black or a dark skin woman of color, this entire phrasing leaves a bad taste in my mouth as someone who is dark-skinned, black and GNC.
The argument that “Mel would have no reasons to be fond for someone whose for radical methods who never cooperates or compromises from the either side” doesn’t align with canon either. Mel remained in a relationship with Jayce, who weaponized Hextech, armed the police force with it, invaded Zaun and killed a child in the process. Conversely, Sevika is a radical, yes, but once again, at the end of Arcane we see her join the Piltover Council, which had to be the biggest form of compromise and cooperation with the other side a character like her could ever do. Even down to Mel’s mother, who her diplomatic senses were built in opposition of, she still loved, even though their relationship was complex and grief-ridden.
I think most Melvika fans, as most fans of crack ships do, understand that their relationship is extremely unlikely in canon and would need a fair amount of OOC-ness to make it work. It’s perfectly fine if Melvika isn’t a relationship that you’re interested in seeing, too. However I think when bringing up things such as classism and queerphobia along with using unfavorable brushstroke claims for a very small fandom filled with similarly racially marginalized people, there should be a little more tact in how these things are discussed.
I kind of don't appreciate racism being brushed off as discourse when its so prevalent far more prevalent than idk being mislabelled as a bigot for example. Idc if you don't like what I like but can you not be racist about it or belittle Black fans when they raise these concerns? Your fandom safe space is sounding more like a klan rally but whatevs
it’s so disingenuous when people act like they’re above people who fight to make being in online fan spaces less hostile for marginalized people, in this case black people. Not engaging in the debates doesn’t make these people intellectually, morally or emotionally superior, it at least means they just choose not to participate and at most shows how apathetic they are to the most vulnerable people who can’t simply just ignore it as they do.
