Don't you like how TGCF, the novel where MC's image is still considered "pure" and worthy of religious faith even after being brutally physically mutilated, martyred, tortured, but an ounce of self gratification, of expressing sexual desire would "taint" that image and cause him to lose power, where MC could only ever be happy after letting go of the "proper" ways of his cultivation method to live a fulfilling married life, gets praised for being the "pure" danmei novel because there is no explicit sexual scenes in it due to strict censorship on any sexual content in china that could lead to authors facing actual jail time, despite severe body horror and cruelty, basically everything crude you could come up with being depicted in the said book. How some dipshits actually are audacious enough to announce that they prefer the censored "untainted" version of hualian because it shows how "pure" their love is. Then say that they didn't like the extra's implications right after that... because eww!! Kinky.

the one thing i love about hualians dynamic that hua chengs choice to always give xie lian the agency he was never offered with anyone else. like he truly and wholeheartedly believes that xie lian should be allowed to make any decision he wants and all he asks for in return is to be able to protect him no matter the circumstance. it reflects so perfectly with xie lians belief that even tho hua chengs moral compass doesn’t align perfectly with his own, he trusts hua cheng isn’t going to do anything that would make them incompatible.

all this to say, hualians D/s dynamics that are implied throughout the novel seem that much more intentional. like xie lian, who’s stubborn and generally refuses to back down or even listen when he believes he knows best, is always so quick to let hua cheng take the lead whenever he can. xie lian Wants to be bossed around by hua cheng, he Likes it. there’s so many examples in tgcf where xie lian just goes completely plaint when faced with hua chengs more dominate personality traits.

Ngl, I don't get why some see Xie Lian being submissive towards Hua Cheng as a bad thing. Without delving into the bedroom stuff, which is their business and idm about what y'all think they do in there, but, in general, why is his 'submission' towards him sometimes seen in a negative light?

What is so wrong with being devoted or even 'submitting' to a person ?

Why is him submitting to the person who devoted himself to him, yes, taken as something negative?

lt's okay when Hua Cheng does it. lt's okay when he gives himself a name that implies he is the home to the Flower Crowned Martial God. lt's okay when his title itself represents that he 'seeks' him. It's okay when he says he will forever be his most 'devoted' believer. In fact, that line is hailed as one of the most beautiful and romantic lines in all of danmei. It is okay when he does all this, but when Xie Lian is 'submissive' towards him, it is taken as a weakness and a negative aspect that we must rectify.

Hua Cheng is Xie Lian's believer, the person to whom he devoted himself to when he was at his lowest. The person in front of whom he bowed when he was a Supreme.

Even the mighty ghost king that defeated 33 gods bowed in front of a small white flower because he it was an offering to his God. He saw his God in it. In an inconspicuous lonesome flower stained by blood rain and he left his umbrella there.

That's the extent of his devotion. It isn't just about him making those giant statues, but him seeing his "God" in a small flower. It's him showing his devotion not just by burning incense in lavish temples or by lighting 3000 lanterns, but also by bowing to and protecting a flower that probably nobody would spare a second glance at.

Xie Lian's 'devotion' and the act of submiting himself to Hua Cheng, if you could call it that, is also a reward for that undying loyalty and devotion that Hua Cheng offered to him for 800 years.

It's his reward. lt's what he got in return to selflessly devoting himself to him without expecting anything in return.

And Xie Lian, by doing so, is not 'lowering'himself down. lt is not a character assassination by any means. Hua Cheng isn't just a random man. He is the one who saw and stayed by his side when he was at his lowest. He is the one who believed in him when everybody saw him as naught but a source of mockery and a laughingstock. And he did all this without expecting him to return his affections. Without ever forcing him to accept his feelings or implying that he is obligated to do so.

What is wrong with submitting and devoting yourself to such a person?

#prev said it good but also#xl since his birth was given the title of a leader which he didn't really want#and since becoming a god he basically lost his agency because he was supposed to give to other people#to look out for them all the time#and even being a scrap collector he was always just fixing other's problems as a traveling monk#him rejecting the heavenly emperor title shows that he does not really want having to be responsible for everyone's problems again#and not to say he's submissive as a person he is really stubborn and would go against gods as a human if it was against his ideals#but what i don't understand how people knowing (presumably they have some kind of literacy) all that find xl submitting to hc emasculating#disempowering. does it not tickle their brain that someone who has been on their own for so long and always gave and was never given#something in return#gets to be the one being pampered and taken care of#in this scenario he gets to have more agency than he ever had even if it means “loosing” some of it bc that's what he really needs and like#txt#tgcf#i get that there also are people who erm think hc needs to be babied#but i think HE is the one who gets a kick from being the strongest & being able to provide for his family so that xl never has to struggle#controversual opinion i know but let him be the dommy daddy one that's his fantasy and i don't think it needs to be fixed or corrected#it kind of missed the original topic yeah but the answer to that is misogyny bc being physically of daintier build and having a submissive#role in a relationship is not woke enough bc it could not be entertaining and pleasant for the submitting person he's a manly man after all#amarighy#it's okay when it's hc though bc he would do anything!! for his prince even if it means taking the pain of being a filthy bottom 😔#and also this way you're subverting very unwoke mxtx's idea and you get to be woker on basis of flipping the “heteronormative” canon

Another TGCF novel fun fact that I think a lot of people don't notice

Despite all the official art--including the book art--showing Xie Lian's cursed shackles as tattoos, in the novel they're actual shackles. He can feel them. They're physical shackles that Xie Lian passes off as objects for training (weighted objects like Rock Lee's weights are a common martial arts trope):

Obviously if they were simply tattoos he wouldn't be able to excuse them as that. They're actual physical shackles in the books. While I do occasionally see fanart or people talking about other stuff I've pointed out, I think this is something I've never actually seen acknowledged elsewhere to any form. It's so unnoticed that once I realized all the art has it as a tattoo I changed work-in-progress fanart because Xie Lian wearing actual shackles was met with confusion lol

Can someone who's read the English translation of TGCF tell me how they translated the name of those meatball things that Xie Lian cooks and later throws at the Daoist gang because I simply can't imagine that they called them "purity balls"

Incorruptible chastity meatballs!

Completely get Hualian keeping the memory demon for future use. Horny reasons aside haha, can you imagine getting the chance to meet and fall in love with your favorite person again? I think all the time that I wish I could re-experience watching/reading tgcf for the very first time, but I also don’t wish that because of all the memories I made the actual first time around. Having the opportunity to experience it again (and in a new way) but regaining my memories after I’m done? Hell yes I’d have some fun with it.

Hm i wonder if ermine xie lian is chinese fandom's invention or a western one that got really popular? I know that beefleaf as a shipname was born in a twitter thread in 2019ish and rapidly gained popularity and now pretty much everyone uses it. Where does ermine xie lian come from though bc it's a pretty recent invention that got recognized by official accs and even MXTX herself!! but the only xl animal sona i remember pre- 2021??? was a rabbit which has nearly gone extinct by now (thank god)

Ermines are unhinged. While they’re extremely cute they will fight you. It fits The Flower Crowned Martial God more than a bunny.

Their behavior is enough to justify the choice to me.

# taking notes
