Punctuating Dialogue

โœง

โžธ โ€œThis is a sentence.โ€

โžธ โ€œThis is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,โ€ she said.

โžธ โ€œThis,โ€ he said, โ€œis a sentence split by a dialogue tag.โ€

โžธ โ€œThis is a sentence,โ€ she said. โ€œThis is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.โ€

โžธ โ€œThis is a sentence followed by an action.โ€ He stood. โ€œThey are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.โ€

โžธ She said, โ€œUse a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.โ€

โžธ โ€œUse a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,โ€ he said.

โ€œUnless there is a question mark?โ€ she asked.

โ€œOr an exclamation point!โ€ he answered. โ€œThe dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because itโ€™s not truly the end of the sentence.โ€

โžธ โ€œPeriods and commas should be inside closing quotations.โ€

โžธ โ€œHey!โ€ she shouted, โ€œSometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.โ€

However, if itโ€™s not dialogue exclamation points can also be โ€œoutsideโ€!

โžธ โ€œDoes this apply to question marks too?โ€ he asked.

If itโ€™s not dialogue, can question marks be โ€œoutsideโ€? (Yes, they can.)

โžธ โ€œThis applies to dashes too. Inside quotations dashes typically expressโ€”โ€œ

โ€œInterruptionโ€ โ€” but there are situations dashes may be outside.

โžธ โ€œYouโ€™ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses donโ€™t have a comma after them eitherโ€ฆโ€ she said.

โžธ โ€œMy teacher said, โ€˜Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.โ€™โ€

โžธ โ€œUse paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,โ€ he said.

โ€œThe readers will know itโ€™s someone else speaking.โ€

โžธ โ€œIf itโ€™s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.

โ€œThis shows itโ€™s the same character continuing to speak.โ€

omg this is so helpful

I made these as a way to compile all the geographical vocabulary that I thought was useful and interesting for writers. Some descriptors share categories, and some are simplified, but for the most part everything is in its proper place. Not all the words are as useable as others, and some might take tricky wording to pull off, but I hope these prove useful to all you writers out there!

(save the images to zoom in on the pics)

Oh, thatโ€™s very helpful indeed!
