Day 1: Angst
No worries, MJ isn't dead. I'm just a sucker for the "character's loved one gets hurt and then they go apeshit" trope. @petermj-week
Spider-Man: No Way Homeย | Dir. Jon Watts
(Across the Spider-Verse spoiler)
on the one hand
what is the fucking point of flipping it you pulled it out of the sheath by the handle thereโs no goddamn need for that
why even bother having a special spot easiy to reach in your black leather suit for knives if youโre just going to play with them when you take them out
but on the other hand
hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngย
(Heโs switching grips, largely because someone like Steve ainโt gonna give you an easy target for a straight thrust, especially if heโs got his shield, which makes for a lot of over and underhand stuff. But god yess hnnnnnnnnng.)
Also he LOOKS like heโs pulling it out normally, then flips it aroundโif you donโt have the advantage of a specific close-up youโd easily miss the little flip and think his blade was pointing toward his thumb.ย Then when he pulls his arm back across his body you think heโs pointing the knife over to his left, when in reality it is pointing straight at you and heโs about to slam it in your face.ย The arm movement to pull it out of the sheath that other way is super awkward and telegraphs the fact that your bladeโs going to be reversed from the very beginning.ย But the Winter Soldier is a tricksy bastard.ย And IIRC, it worksโSteve isnโt aware until his arm comes down to strike that heโs about to get hit.ย Otherwise heโd find a better way to block it.
</fencer>
Now with additional commentary from a fencer. My โhnnnnnnnngโ is only exponentially increased.
Tl;dr knife flips are a useful, brutal, excellent tool.ย When the Winter Soldier is coming after you with a knife youโd better have superhuman reflexes, because he is going to attack you from every possible avenue.ย If I only hold my blade like a screwdriver, there are a limited number of physical movements I can make, and they are relatively predictable.ย If I hold it like an icepick, the repetoire changes but is likewise limited.ย If I can flip it around with absolutely no notice, Iโve effectively doubled how difficult I am to defend against.
Reblogging for commentary, and also because I could watch that gif all day.
All of this, and also, even if he WAS just playing with it, fucking around with a weapon is one of the ways that you get really good with it. With knives specifically, for a guy like Bucky โ in both his lives โ youโd pretty much have one on you at all times, and a lot of the military life (and probably the assassin life too) involves sitting around being bored as shit waiting for the death and terror to start. You end up playing with your weapons, because theyโre there, and thatโs one of the primary ways you really learn that weapon inside and out. You might play around, switching your grip, flipping it over and over, learning to catch it by the handle, by the point, learning to throw it, learning the exact weight and the center of its balance and all the other things that make handling it so effortlessโฆ itโs all just repetition and asking yourself โI wonder if I canโฆ.โ and doing it until yes, indeed, you can stab some guy in the face before he can even see you coming.
oh wow.
Thatโs a government approved fidget spinner. Let a dude stim in peace.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
goat fight. non-negotiable.
#LISTEn listen most marvel fights feel so contrived and fake and like la-dee-da-superhero#but this one was REAL and had me on the edge of my seat and still does#partially bc of the street clothes not costumes#partially because steve is fighting 1 on 1 and gets stripped of his shield quick#and he has to show like his physical combat skills#and the ACTING on both their parts.. fucking ace#esp chris evans tho like his face looks PANICKED how often do u see captain fucking america panicked??#anyway in this essay i willย (tags via @asterlark)
I think itโs also very important that this is a fight in which the characters *actually interact with their environment* in a way that feels real. Like, yes, have superpowers but thereโs no cartoon physics involved, no obvious sense that this was filmed on an empty set with a greenscreen and the background was added later, or that theyโre filming without even the people theyโre fighting being present, just โlook over here and make a hand gestureโ. The shield gets stuck in a car, thereโs that awful moment of the knife sliding along the side of the van that cues up with the mounting tension in the soundtrack. Buckyโs arm impacts the pavement and actually dents it, etc. Theyโre jumping over/behind the cars and getting thrown into them/into the pavement in a way that feels more visceral than just โwhoosh there was a wire & we CGIโd in the restโ. t has a sense of real world space to it, and that adds to the feeling of real world stakes.
This is one of the few fight scenes I can recall seeing that makes a little knife look like a real threat. Like I am legit scared for Steve when that thing darts in, because heโs not wearing armor and it really feels like the WS could open him up like a can. I feel like movie fight scenes donโt usually hit that note with knives.
that take-out is going to be freezing by the time it gets home.
