I'm not involved in the mcu side of spider-man fandom and all this time I thought "petermjane" was just an alternate name for their ship, because it's not uncommon for ships to have multiple names. knowing the lore behind it leaves a bad taste in my mouth now. yikes.
Yep, it’s super insidious too because there’s people now that think/say that it’s just a way to signify comic MJ from any other version, especially because the big old mean MCU fans take over everything in fandom.
In reality, it was a few Mary Jane Watson / comic blogs that were violently and virulently racist about MCU MJ, arguing up and down:
- that she wasn’t the real MJ because she wasn’t named Mary Jane
- Which then transformed into a weird “I’m not racist, I just think the REAL racists are Disney”
- Which, true! And yet translated into excluding the (1) Black MJ we have WHILE ALSO including every other version, INCLUDING TASM MJ that wasn’t even in the movie
- (The simultaneous amount of fawning over Shailene Woolley as MJ and denigrating Zendaya as MJ was hypocritical at best)
- that Michelle Jones— as she was known in fandom at the time because I’ll never let anyone forget that MCU MJ did NOT have a canonical last name until No Way Home— wasn’t anything like Mary Jane Watson so it’s not just the name change, it’s her characterization
- (Despite the fact that again, these blogs LOVED TASM MJ— who was not even in the movie— and celebrated PS4 MJ who while I love dearly, is nothing like comic Mary Jane either. She’s a red headed Lois Lane)
- Constantly posting (and picking fights) with people about how everyone’s wrong and they’re not racist, despite having long bio posts and info in their headers that were explicitly anti-MCU MJ for a garden variety of racist reasons
- (Which conveniently have since been removed but the Wayback Machine will never let anyone forget)
As someone who loved MJ far before the MCU and will love her when the MCU is done, the frustration that comic fans might have about the MCU infiltrating everything is understandable, but the OUTRIGHT racism of these same people against MCU MJ goes far beyond “not liking a version of a character”
It’s why as a practice, I try to ALWAYS include the petermajne tag, why I tag my AO3 fics now as MJ/Peter Parker, and why I’ve campaigned so hard (to little success because of how AO3’s team is) to wrangle the Peter Parker/Mary Jane Watson tag all as one.
It WAS racist, dumb, and stupid to name Zendaya’s character Michelle, have her go by the nickname MJ, REFUSE to give her a backstory or a life throughout the first trilogy, nor even giving her a LAST NAME until the end (and said last name being a double-barreled one because the fandom named her Jones). We can all agree that was dumb as fuck.
What I do NOT agree with is this revisionist history or victim complex arguing that MCU MJ’s fandom existence is somehow “infecting” everyone else. It’s racist. It’s stupid. And even worse, the biggest comic blogs out there will never shut the fuck up about the MCU “ruined” things with MCU Spider-Man, and refuse to see any of the good in it (like MCU Peter’s class and New York actually looking New York for one).
tl;dr petermjane might have racist origins and intentions but I and many others have taken the name fucking back.

“You can’t ignore the Spider?” Peter reads the headline with confusion. “A menace to health, home and industry? He lurks in sewers— That’s, I don’t…I don’t do that often!” he says defensively, before adding quietly, sheepishly, “not recently, anyway.”
“It’s just a little thing for fun,” MJ says, dabbing away the laughter induced tears from the corner of her eyes.
“Fun? I’m a little…rat man!” he exclaims, shoving the image towards her as if she hasn’t seen it before.

It takes time for Peter to adjust to his new schedule for patrolling, the desire to be home with his growing family taking precedence.
More than anything, his new patrolling schedule meant he got to be home with his family more often, refusing to miss any milestone.
With Sloane, who’d relished in prolonging bedtime with longer stories and requests for cuddles in bed while they looked at the glow in the dark stars he’d hung on her ceiling amidst her love for astrology.
With Oliver, who at five months old seemed to be getting older faster than Peter could comprehend, coming home from work to find he’d learned something new while he was gone, his little personality showing glimpses of shining through.
With MJ, who he somehow fell in love with even more each day, savoring their quiet evenings catching up on their TV shows or watching movies, unwinding from making it through the day as parents of two kids.

They’re 17 and seniors in high school, the excitement of college is just as normal as any other kid in their grade. They’re selfish and worrying about living the moment, too young to think that anything could affect them.
It’s silly, and the constant what ifs and potential choices they’re going to have to make loom in the background, but for right now, they can still be the same two kids that met in the cafeteria in third grade, the world at their feet and the naivety to believe that things will be okay.

Caring about his own failing grades when he was doomed to repeat the year, didn't matter. Gwen already had a job secured– her last few grades wouldn’t affect her position there but she didn’t settle.
Peter liked that most about her.
