for right now, comic pages are simultaneously posted publicly on the patreon, even for free and non-members. Since there have been some rumblings re: tumblrs future that make me a bit uneasy, I’m strongly considering starting to post on bluesky or even something like comic fury. I’ll be sure to post those links once I set those accounts up!
oh I should clarify, the comic’s not going anywhere here on tumblr, even if I start to post elsewhere too! this is my preferred place to post and I will keep putting the comic here until the sun explodes or tumblr stops being a website 😂 whichever comes first

birthday requests are part of the $5 tier on my patreon! it’s a shaded sketch, sometimes with a minimal background if applicable (sometimes I get a little carried away 😂) prompts can be as general or specific as the requester likes!
"Oh, I'll pick a page from Bonus Links to analyse for my comics course" I thought. "I love it so it'll be easy!" I foolishly believed. Turns out the trouble comes from only choosing one page. I am in a hell of my own making (reading the entire thing to pick my definite favourite) and will be punished (I will write so much and probably get top marks in the course).

Definitely a fan of this spin on the All Links AU, but until the second jump it felt like it was going to be a short story: Skyloft Link seeing the final result of the curse he feared, but learning that even when failure is certain, life goes on. Did you always intend for it to stretch on into a much longer All Links AU, or was that part intentional?
the story was always intended to go this way! not to spell out my own themes I guess lol but part of the point is that the cycle seems like it ties into a neat bow that way, but the reality is that it doesn’t.
not that Slate is wrong or anything—Hyrule does always return, and the people are still here, and that means something. But it’s up to Loft to determine whether he’s satisfied with that, and that’s what the rest of the story is gonna explore

yeah! it's probably a good idea to start doing that anyway but I do wanna note that my pinned post has a comic archive page linked. I'm not always great about putting new updates on it (sorry lol) so it's only got half of Ch. 2 on it, but all the older updates should be linked if you're ever looking for a specific one.

- this is also one of my favorite updates (and 100% my favorite dialogue in all of ch.1, possibly the whole comic so far) but I'm glad I waited to do a commentary bc I think this is actually really relevant to the latest update
- cause like the conversation Loft has with botw Zelda here is very similar to the one he has with Ganondorf, though he's much less snippy during it
- I wanted to give Zelda a chance to be bitter and share her grievances with the gods. Her entire story in BOTW is largely about how the legends and the expectations put upon her by them fail not only her personally but the entire kingdom. And yet she's made to feel like it's all her fault.
- A lot of his comic focuses on the legacy of the Hero, but I don't want to leave Zelda (or Ganondorf) out of the conversation. The cycle makes victims of all three of them in various ways, and while I can't do everything at once, it's still my goal to explore that. The Zeldas in particular are all in interesting positions as members of the Royal Family, because they're at once always thrown in peril by it with little agency, and expected to be the facilitators of its success as the people with the closest proximity to the gods. Much to think about.
- on that note BOTW Zelda is my favorite Zelda. she is my babygirl. she is my everything. I will die a BOTW Zelda defender. we haven't seen the last of her in this comic i promise :-)
- okay on to actually analyzing the comic. This top panel is framed like a diptych, two paintings hinged together. these are often (though not always) associated with religious paintings and are often altarpieces. I use a triptych format in the newest update :D sidenote I think it's very cute that some of the Hylia statues in BOTW have been decorated, so i gave her a little flower crown
- I imagine praying starts to feel a little strange when you are dating ur god. yeah. Also I think it's interesting that Skyloft seems to mainly worship Hylia, with the other gods being more distant. It makes sense given the whole "she personally raised us up into the sky to save us all" thing. Even though Loft is the very first hero sent on a personal religious quest directly by his goddess, I've always imagined him as kind of,,,,casually devout? In that way that it's all you've ever known. Like obviously his beliefs are deeply ingrained, but he's not as into the formality of it all as other Links we might meet later.
- I think about Zelda in that freezing pool on Mt. Lanayru all the time. RAHHHHHHH
- I've posted this before but close up of Slate running their errands, the errand being talking to the Great Fairies about if they've noticed anything weird going on lol. I actually wanted to make it a whole update on its own, but I cut it for time and also because. I don't think the Great Fairies really have any information that was necessary other than "no I don't know what's going on". So u get this panel.
- I like this shot of that little statue towering over the both of them, and I mimic it a little bit in the new update here. something something about why we build monuments and what they stand for.

- Loft still has to believe that Zelda and Slate's negative experiences had to have been some sort of misunderstanding. If Hylia could have helped, she would have. Knowing and loving your goddess on a human level also makes you want to give her the benefit of the doubt.
- I actually really love that in BOTW Zelda resents Link for having some sort of access to the divine that she just can't reach. She has her arc about it in the game, but especially now she's come to understand that having the gods' favor is a double-edged sword. Also, that's not really meant to be Peony, but I like the idea that Champion also had an affinity for fairies. :-( Intentionally the same pose as Slate at the fairy fountain, though Slate is so tiny I probably didn't need to bother lol
that was a lot of rambling lol but i have. so many thoughts abt the subject matter of this update. this is the shit about LOZ that makes me froth at the mouth tbh
I want you to know I've only known Wake for 10 minutes (after reading the current comic for the better of an hour now) and I want to cosplay him or Mage so bad at my local ren faire or convention!!! Unless you're uncomfortable with that then I'll refrain 🙂↕️ I love this universe you've created and all your character designs and writing so much!! Eagerly awaiting the next update <3

Ahhhhh my brain is really chewing on your comment about the statue and whether it's supposed to be child or adult, yeah in the screenshot it definitely doesn't look like child but idk it almost looks like it could be in between to me which is very inch er resting but also when I first read your comment my first thought was "well adult link is also a child" like not just mentally but like he's only 7 years older...I don't know if I picked this up somewhere or just headcanoned it but I always thought the ages were 10 and 17 but I don't think he's escaping teen years no matter how you slice it...well train of thought lost because now I'm just thinking of the "he's just a child" "well you're just a teenager" dialogue between aang and zuko in avatar, but yes much to chew on....
OH YEAH UR TOTALLY RIGHT “adult Link” is a misnomer even though that’s kind of how the game presents it, he’s still a child either way. Also I think abt that dialogue from avatar all the time

- the original draft of this scene was much shorter, and Loft actually didn't say anything at all in it. As I kept making the chapter it started to feel weird that he would just. Let Ganondorf say his piece without contributing anything. i like this version of the scene much better
- listen. I love WW Ganondorf. He's my favorite Ganondorf. I was going to find a way to fit him into this chapter no matter what
- in particular, I love that you get a sense from WW Ganondorf that he is, on some level, sympathetic to Link. Or if not sympathetic, understanding of his place in all this. He tells Link that his gods have abandoned him, that he has not particular quarrel with him, etc. But ultimately it doesn't matter. If this is who the gods have sent to stand in his way, so be it. Essentially, it's not my fault the gods are so callous as to send a child after me.
- we're going w the canon that WW Ganondorf is the same as OOT, or at least remembers being him. Don't ask me how. Nintendo doesn't know either

- How does Ganondorf recognize Loft? by that stupid hat. jokes aside he doesn't know Which Link Specifically Loft is, but he's smart enough to figure out that he's a hero of some sort.
- Likewise, Loft is smart enough to figure it out as well. He's spent a lot of his chapter thinking about Ganondorf, and if you'll recall from Ch1, he knows from Zelda that Ganon once had a mortal form. I think, from Loft's perspective, he has a hunch that this Ganon figure is the mortal reincarnation of Demise, the way Zelda is the mortal reincarnation of Hylia. I wanna emphasize that's what HE thinks might be going on based on his experiences. He's not the knower of all things. He has a conspiracy board in his mind
- the face of a guy who's like. I am not going to be lectured to about morality from the King of Evil. I was very excited to let Loft be snarky at long last. But he also, notably, doesn't push back against what Ganondorf is saying that hard. He doesn't even say that he's wrong, just implies that he's probably a hypocrite. In fact, a lot of this update is about what Loft DOESN'T say or acknowledge
- Ganondorf's opening line is about how much he hates that statue of the hero of time, because it's "such grandeur for a mere child". I think he means that at face value, but he's also making another point— the hero of time was a child, but they're not going to depict him that way in his monument. It's honestly sort of ambiguous with the actual model because of ww's style, but it looks like adult proportions to me. The story Wake grew up with calls him a child, but his monument in the castle is of an adult. That was the idea behind this set of panels, the parts of the Hero of Time's story that aren't going to be put on the pedestal
- speaking of that I realized making this update that I literally. forgot the pedestal. I just didn't draw it all this time. in my defense the castle in no clip looks like this. no statue or pedestal
- except I recently found out by accident that he's literally. under the floor. what the fuck
- ANYWAY. I really liked the symmetry of Ganondorf turing to stone at the end of the dream. He won't get any perfect monuments made to him. Also, looks like there's a suspicious lack of water in the underwater castle. which could mean nothing
- I'm not gonna comment too much on other details, because i've got to keep some of my secrets. I do think that this update gives a lot away HAHA though that was kind of on purpose. We're entering year 3 of this comic and we're finally starting to get places lolol
- WAIT I ALMOST FORGOT loft looks the same way he did when he last touched the triforce

I wonder if from Ganondorfs pov Loft was just an angry kitten. He's just looking down and all he sees is a smol young and angry hero and is just like, you are a scruffy angry kitten. My mortal enemy, but also a tiny angry thing
HAHA YEAH this entire conversation is so hilarious from his perspective. I almost made “they really do make all of you wear that hat” one of Ganondorf’s opening lines but I took it out 😂😂😂
