musings of a (former) grad student / PhD / focus on Shakespeare and early modern drama / follow from @lizbennett2013 / I track #books-and-studyblr

I am trying very hard to do a thing this school year where I do no work on the weekends because I have a horrible work/life balance which has only been made worse by job applications, dissertation work, and teaching.

Unfortunately, this means I now spend my weekends staring at my walls and mentally screaming because I'm not being productive enough.

We are halfway(ish) through the summer, and I have:

  • completed one chapter and sent it out for review to my committee
  • written about half of the next chapter and should have a completed draft done by the end of the month if all goes as planned
  • started working on job application materials because that’s right around the corner (yikes)

hey real quick if youre a studyblr or even just a person in academia and

🌟 are neurodivergent and/or struggle with mental or physical health problems that impede on your academic performance

🌟 are a first gen student or otherwise feel a bit lost navigating this world compared to your peers who might have a bit more uh,, nepo baby energy

🌟 really hate the corrupt and elitist parts of academia but also love your studies and your dreams too much to give up on it

🌟 genuinely want to better the world with your education not just dangle it over people as part of a god complex or use it to help gatekeep knowledge

🌟 just generally kinda feel like academia wasnt really built for you but you are determined to make it so that it is, if not for yourself then for future generations at the very least

interact with this would you? you dont even need to follow if you arent a studyblr or dont want that on your dash, i just feel chronically alone out here sometimes and i could use the reminder that i am definitely not the only person feeling like this and not the only one fighting this fight. if this post only gets one note thats good enough for me lol

women's history month is upon us and these are the topics i'll be posting about this year:

  • women poets i fell in love with in 2022
  • queenship in early modern europe
  • women, the arts, and patronage
  • actual feminist retellings (1970s to present)
  • edith of wessex and the vita ædwardi regis
  • lady caroline lamb's glenarvon
  • feminist essays (and books) that changed me

i'm scaling things back this year because i'm working full-time (sad times) but i'm still super excited about these posts! i always enjoy women's history month on the blog.

anyways, i'll be posting here, on ko-fi, and on wordpress if you want to read any of these posts! and if you like my work, your support would be much appreciated over on ko-fi <3

So excited to see queenship on here! I work on kingship in EM drama, but it’s hard not to get drawn into Elizabeth I and queenship studies - looking forward to this!

i'm really enjoying the research i'm doing for it! i did some for my PhD, although it was never my main topic, because you can't get away from Elizabeth's influence on EM literature but looking at things like politics, revolution, learning, counsel, and 'wicked' women has been so much fun.

also, your research sounds so interesting! kingship is a fascinating topic :)

Yes - Elizabeth is EVERYWHERE! It makes it difficult to talk about kings because scholarship very much wants to wave Elizabeth in your face (which is one of the things I’m looking at in my dissertation).

And thanks for the compliment! I’m always happy to chat kingship and masculinity - it’s such a fun area to work in!

Honestly though, I feel really good about the chapter I’m currently writing and I’m pretty sure I can knock out a full draft by the end of March. Which will be good because I have three more to write.
