i'm so so sorry i think this was from july and then i got confused about how messages work and couldn't find it again.

but anyway

My first thought was 'i don't have 5 works' but it turns out i have 16. huh. My five favorite completed pieces are:

Honey If I'm Not/If You're Gonna - Canon-adjacent Wolfstar reunion AU set in Burlington. Set this in one of my favorite places and wrote it while getting engaged and married, and a it's been an unexpected path to a lot of wonderful friendships <3

Snow in June - Modern magical American texting strangers to lovers Wolfstar AU with hurt/comfort, a Jily wedding, James as a wegmans stan, supportive Dorlene and magical time capsule bubbles? This one's hard to categorize, but I really enjoyed writing it. Also set in one of my favorite places.

Better in the Morning - Bring back Black, fix-it one shot set in HBP. Truly this one had been bouncing around in my head since about 2004 and it's been really meaningful to me that a lot of readers have connected with it.

Forecasting with @rottendiary - Perciver snowed in one shot. Listen - Percy is a weather man. Oliver is a sports caster. In Buffalo, NY, in a snowstorm. It actually makes so much sense when you think about it.

Breeze (Move Me) - Drarry one shot inspired by Hozier's Movement and summer days in Provincetown. My first Drarry and most E E-rated fic. They are idiots and I adore them.

Seamus Finnigan and Irish Stereotyping

Hello,

This is my first attempt at a Tumblr post so forgive me if this lacks all sense.

For context, I was born and raised Irish, if that's important for this post.

I've been in the Harry Potter fandom since the age of eleven. During that time I've dipped in and out and have gained more knowledge and nuanced thought towards literature in-between. Admittedly these books are not well-written even if you ignore the immense bigotry drowning anything JKR does. I've seen many conversations surrounding the blatant transphobia of JKR and the racism, anti-semitism and homophobia within her work. All of these are extremely important topics that we, as a fandom, need to continue the discussion on. One of the more subtle forms of hate shown through her work that I don't often see talked about, is her treatment of Seamus Finnigan and her portrayal of Irish society and it's people through that.

The more obvious stereotyping is seen through Seamus and his "proclivity for pyrothenics" (a quote from McGongall in the Deathly Hallows Part 2). A key point to note about the books is that they were written during and in the aftermath of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. I'm not going to do an in depth explanation of the Troubles itself as that would require me to recap over 800 years of British Colonial rule and oppression over Ireland but I will give a brief run-through for clarity incase anyone reading is unaware of the conflict.

The troubles as it's known today spanned from 1968-1998 and resulted in an estimated 3600 deaths. The stereotype of Irish individuals having a supposed "proclivity for pyrotechnics" comes from the IRA (Irish Republican Army). This group was formed by Irish civilians to fight against Catholic Nationalist communities oppression through violent means. This post by no means is an attempt to jusitfy the horrifc actions of the IRA during the Troubles. It is only an attempt to shed light on the harmful stereotyping JKR imbedded in her primary Irish representation in the Harry Potter series. Saying your Irish Character has a penchant for explosives, during a time in which Irish people were in the midst or recovering from such a violent conflict, leaves the assumption that Seamus, the only real reoccuring Irish representation, is a part of the IRA or that Irish people in general love to blow things up and cause chaos. This is harmful, especially when being read by young british people. Political relations in Northern Ireland and between Ireland and Britain were incredibly strained and still are in some aspects. Pushing the narrative that Irish people are dangerous does not help heal these relations and subtly increases the bad image of Irish people in the eyes of British society.

Another issue with Seamus Finnigan's character is the mentions of alcohol. It's a common stereotype that Irish people love alcohol and this has been used to demonise our culture in other areas of media. In The Philosphers Stone (keep in mind Seamus would've been 11-12 years old at the time.) Seamus actively tries to turn water into rum. The spell itself can be implied to be of Irish origin "Eye of rabbit, harp string hum, turn this water into rum" as the harp is the Emblem of Ireland. Having your Irish character, at the assumed age of 11, try to turn water into rum is incredibly harmful and builds on this "drunken Irish" stereotype. Not to mention the spell results in multiple explosions, linking back to my first point of his "proclivity for pyrotechnics."

My final point, which is simultanously the most subtle but quite frankly the craziest and most damaging is Seamus' initials matching that of the party Sinn Fein. I've already given a brief synopsis of the Troubles and a key thing to note about Sinn Fein is that they were heavily intertwined with the IRA with the two initally starting out as the same group before splitting into an armed group (the IRA) and a political half (The party Sinn Fein.) So intertwined that their president during the 80s, Gerry Adams, was also the tactical leader of the IRA (alledgedly...). Once again JKR has managed to subtly (yet not so subtly if you know what to look for) imply her primary Irish character is a memeber of the anti- british violent organisation through his initals.

Another point that is more of a reach than my other points is that Seamus is the first of Harry's friends to turn on him in ootp. The only Irish character turning on the British hero and in a sense leading the hate train against him? Given the clear views JKR holds against the Irish, it's not too much of a jump to assume that she'd start by villianising Seamus.

Overall it's clear JKR had some very strong opinions on the Irish that she felt the absolute need to inform everyone on through her work aimed at children. Rather unfortunate as a young Irish reader who watched their idol not only begin a campagin agaisnt their rights as a trans individual but also perpetuate horrible ideas against a country still feeling the impact of decades long violent conflict.

Once again it comes far too easily to condemn JKR and her horribly damaging actions agaisnt her own readers.

You guys I just realized that what I’ve always wanted out of werewolf fiction is a story where lycanthropy isn’t a purely human condition

Like this dude wakes up from his wolfbender and his room is full of all these fucking chickens from local farms that he initiated into his pack. They all start clucking and crowing at the moon and when it’s full they all transform into these tiny little weird bipedal wolves with wings.

I don’t remember making this post but it’s going around again and I’m losing my shit

Pocket Apocalypse by @seananmcguire has some non-human werewolves!

would love to know anything about snow in June sequel 💙

hello! just to be completely honest, this is entirely in my head atm, but my thoughts are:

  • wolfstar have been together about 18 months
  • they live half in remus' cabin/half in sirius' brooklyn apt
  • jily are around with very young harry
  • everything is going pretty well
  • ...until the brother sirius hasn't talked to in several years shows up 👀

i make no promises. i think it would be shorter than Snow in June and primarily focus on Black family trauma healing?? it's very vague, but i like the shape of it

so, like 2 years ago you made a tiktok, and I don't remember what the original tiktok was about (i don't think it's up anymore, honestly), but I do remember going back and forth in the comments about Lyall Lupin as a father and Remus's name, and i said 'i want to write a fic about that' bc you gave me a cool idea and you said let you know when it was up

and like, it's been 2 years... but it's up now!

sorry that it took so long to finish, i'm sure you don't remember that conversation, but it's been sitting at the back of my mind since 2023 and i felt like i needed to tell you

it's a one-shot 5k, half Remus realizing he's in love with Sirius, half the marauders finding out the backstory of Remus's name, all drunk shenanigans. it's called Truth or Dare. my AO3 is just WayTooTiredForThis. i'd love to tag your account as inspo if that's cool with you, but i didn't want to just do it out of nowhere

hi! you both asked about this two weeks ago, plz forgive lateness

so the only fanfic i've read much of outside HP is Merlin, Twilight (i know) and a bit of Newsies. Merlin I actually got into by reading fics and then I watched the show. I've had Merthur reunion scenes in my head for a long time - like Arthur comes back to do the 'future' part of 'once and future king' and finds merlin is a small bit of a mess.

(this might sound familiar, on account of being the same plot as my 'better in the morning' 😝. Ah well, I do love a reunion trope)

Also - karf, i set this on the LES, so was going to consult you lol

I make no promises, but excerpt:

Arthur's stomach lurches with excitement as he lets his thumb fall on the little words. The map displays a line from where he sits, across the park and up a short side street.

A four minute walk.

Merlin is four minutes away.

Hopefully.

Honestly he better be, or Arthur is going to remember how to be a royal brat and throw a proper tantrum.

Arthur has been searching for Merlin for three months. From the moment when his memories of that other life - his <em>real</em> life? it feels that way - came crashing back, finding Merlin has been the organizing principle of his life.

There Arthur was, twelve weeks ago, having a complete fucking mental breakdown in the ruins of Glastonbury Castle, his mind spinning with images of knights and dragons while his very real, present 12 year old year students goggled at him, and then Merlin’s face blocked out everything else. He thought <em>Ah, yes, you’ll make sense of this</em>.

Arthur’s still waiting for Merlin to make sense of it. He’s glad that in the intervening months, he’s discovered some of their other friends. They’ve all stumbled across his path one by one, just normal people going through an average day until they lay eyes on Arthur and remember who they both were over 1500 years ago.

Gwen was the first, back in week one. He’d been abruptly put on leave from his teaching post when his bk working class accent transformed overnight and implacably into the most insufferable upperclass drawl Arthur had ever heard, and his administration gave him time off, assuming he was dangerously stressed. Arthur’d been reeling and wondering exactly how much of his mind he’d lost when he’d landed in the pub where Gwen tended bar.

She’d taken one look at him, screamed and then thrown a rag at his head. She’d been fired on the spot. While he was trying to defend himself from her accusations in the street (“What kind of timing do you call this! You couldn’t have woken up earlier and stopped Brexit?!” “What the fuck was I supposed to do about it, I was NINE YEARS OLD!”), a tall, broad blonde man in a very nice suit stopped his purposeful striding to interrupt them. He got as far as grabbing Arthur’s shoulder and saying “Mate, cool it,” until he met Arthur’s gaze, blinked and immediately dropped to one knee with a deferential “Your Highness.”

“It’s Arthur,” Arthur said automatically.

“Arthur it is,” Percival said agreeably, before going white in the face and sitting on the pavement in shock.

And I can’t get enough of making Remus Lupin’s mind during this transformation, right? 🥹 I’m in love to draw something more psychedelic that represents this turbulent moment of his lycanthropy ✨

"My child is fine." Your child sees a full moon and immediately starts sobbing about Harry Potter’s third-year DADA professor.
