it's an intersection of misogyny and homophobia. he's seen as such an effeminate man that implicit bias from the more masculine men on the grid view him as gay. because any man who's even a little in touch with their emotions is obviously gay, right? but it's also that they view his traits as effeminate and being more "soft" and "hysterical" is seen as being "womanly". he's literally experiencing both. and it's all deeply patriarchal.
