my lawyer has advised I dont post my opinions on the webtoon because i was quote "being too much of a hater" but ill redraw panels anyways
do fantasy high fans complaining about the webtoon think the intrepid heroes and dropout are not involved at all? like these are their characters and their story, they would be consulted! the changes would HAVE to be ran by them/dropout/brennan before it gets this far as being published online. so have some fucking faith, we’re going to get a fun story, calm the fuck down and let it happen. there is SO MUCH story left, it been only a few episodes. and remember: the original series will always be there to rewatch if you hate the webtoon, it does not ruin the original, and no one is forcing you to read the comic.
i will also never be over zac gaslighting himself into thinking porter’s a good teacher. like he clearly thought they were headed towards a whole “the struggle made you better at what you do so it’s fine actually” message, so he leaned in, because it’s a collaborative story, but the second porter’s revealed to have been a bitchass bully the whole time, zac LOSES HIS MIND

gonna be honest
i dislike the fantasy high webtoon exclusively for the fact it has a main character
everyone who defends this choice, fully misses the point that the original medium, has no single main character. by making riz the main character, it changes what the story is.
i don't care if riz is the only one interested in the main plot of the missing girls, he's the only one that plot was made for, that's not a choice he made. i'd argue adaine put more work into being interested in the main plot than anyone else.
Different anon here, but istg the webtoon is not good. like there is no backstory for fig or ayda or even kristen (maybe webtoon being sexist?), they get rid of such important scenes like the flower scene, and what did they do to my girl Kristen??? she's 1. not wearing her signature tie dye that she wears constantly and 2. somehow lacking any personality at all. also it seems that riz is main character-ified but he doesn't have the goblin eyes and is cute in a way he never seemed to be in game.
tldr I did not like the webtoon

YESSS WHO IS THIS KRISTEN LIKE??? WHAT DID THEY DO TO MY GIRL. GIVE HER THE CHURCH CAMP TIE DYE. also yeah no backstory for the girls is killing me. figs intro is so funny and it's kinda important for the arc of finding gorthalax. not showing the extreme religious household kristen has grown up in is so weird since that's the main part of her fy arc.. literally like 0 background for adaine omfg likeeee please give me the breakfast scene its so important to her first day. aelwyn telling her to steal a book means almost nothing if we dont see the whole story of her not getting into hudol/disappointing her family akdfhakrhsdfauherkjfh and yesss let riz be a goblin. please. (also the ostentatia erasure is so confusing bc riz giving her the tea is the whole reason she gets sick and is captured right??) idk i need to rewatch freshman year so i can better identify each inaccuracy as the webtoon comes out.
Finally, Gorgug Thistlespring...
Gorgug's design is very good. I really like how he looks in the Webtoon. I really like how he and Ragh look very similar, because they're both half-orcs.
What I don't like is how Gorgug is portrayed. Because our first interaction with Gorgug in the podcast is this gloomy teenager who's in a house that's too small for him, with parents that don't understand him, who feels out-of-place and lost. And in the Webtoon, the first time we see him he goes into a rage and suddenly he's this big looming figure. It's not until chapter three that we see him as he is, when he's with Kristen.
Also, the fact that his Webtoon introduction panel is him in a rage just feels wrong to me, as does that fact that his panel includes the motif of an artificer, which (SPOILERS!) he doesn't multiclass into until late season 2.
All that to say, Gorgug's design? Peak. Gorgug's portrayal? Fail.
Kinda pissed over a few people’s reactions to the Fantasy High webtoon. I can admit, that since we’re in a pretty cynical age, I was also skeptical of how it’d turn out.
But I can confidently say that I was pleasantly surprised by the art and competence of it. The cameos were cute and it was generally true to the original episode/plot.
What I’m noticing is people are more so complaining about outfit/art style changes, as well as character interpretations that honestly aren’t that significant or altering. Its a completely different medium, and the characters are going to change style wise, some niche and very specific details aren’t going to filter through because they’re focusing on major components.
While yes, people are allowed to be critical, I truly think we should give this webtoon the benefit of the doubt. Especially since it feels like a gift to us and I’m super proud of Dropout and Fantasy High for coming this far to produce something as linear as this.
